Elisas Diary: Finding Theme through Tableau

Using the Catch/Release Model

EQ: How can we identify and represent the theme of a story?
We chose to include the catch and release model using a single text due to the
complexity of the instructional focus and objectives.
Those being:
Objective #1: SWBAT: How can I determine the theme of a story?
Objective #2: SWBAT: Use characters thoughts and actions to help determine the theme of a
story.
Objective #3: SWBAT: Use imagery and visualization to understand the theme of a story.
Objective #4: SWBAT: Infer beyond the literal meaning of a text.
Day 1:
9:30-11:00
Initial Catch: (9:30-10:00)
-Theme anchor chart (whole group)
-Shared reading lesson
-Create graphic organizer & model finding text evidence to support the theme
Release #1: (10:00-10:15)
-Students will continue reading text and filling out graphic organizer independently until
10:15
Catch #2: (10:15-10:55) Differentiated Small Group (guided)/Release #2: Independent
Reading
- Students who arent finished reading the text will then use independent reading time to read
& continue finishing their graphic organizer
*10:35
*Depending on students needs, we will either break up into small groups or continue
independent reading.
*Depending on how many students finish reading the text:
-CT will take 1 small group using the same text
-Resident will take 1 small group

Catch #3: 10:55-11:00

-Whole group: Debrief about theme & graphic organizer 10 words or less idea
Day 2: (9:30-11am)
-CTs will collect evidence based on the students meeting the 4 listed instructional objectives.
Catch #1: 5 mins: (9:30-9:35)
-Theme Discussion, show our G.O., text-evidence, validate each others thinking
Release #1: 5 mins (9:35-9:40)
-In your own groups, Turn & Talk to discuss your theme and evidence to support. Use your
G.O.
Catch #2a: Quick Debrief & Model (10 mins) (9:40-50)
-Discuss common themes among groups
-Explain tableau: What is a tableau? A phrase-frame snapshot of a scene in a story to represent
theme. Single line of dialogue. CLASS ANCHOR CHART
Catch: #2b: Model Tableau
-B, N, M, will perform tableau model
- Discussion of how our tableau represents class anchor chart & how it relates to the story
Release #2: 30 mins (9:50-10:20)
-Students will plan their tableau using our created graphic organizer.
Step 1: identify the theme
Step 2: What characters will you become?
Step 3: create a single line of dialogue for each character
Catch #3: Student-Centered Tableau Performance (10:20-10:50)
Catch #4: Quickly wrap-up and debrief by verbally answering our EQ (10:50-11:00)
Release #5: Students will answer the EQ by writing (11:00-11:30)
