Prestressed concrete deck members are mostly in an uncracked state

at service load levels that means higher moment of inertia for the
same section consequently reducing the depth of the member.
Using a higher grade material means higher modulus of elasticity,
plus increased effectiveness of the cross
crosssectional
sectional area also means
that larger spans can be achieved for a given depth.
Durability is enhanced, this is achieved in two ways, one is thru the
use of higher strength concrete, and secondly prestressed concrete is
relatively free of cracks.
Dense concrete cast in smooth steel forms has smooth surfaces resist
moisture penetration, fungus and corrosion. Accumulation of dust
and dirt is also reduced. All this results in low maintenance costs.

CE72.52 AdvancedConcreteStructures August2012,Dr.Naveed Anwar

24

The range of surface treatment, patterns, colors etc. provide a

number of possibilities for architectural concrete. Even for
elements which are nonarchitectural, the sturdy formwork imparts
smoother and relatively blemish free surfaces, the sleek lines add to
the appearance.
pp
Plant cast concrete produced under optimum conditions of
forming, placement of reinforcement and inserts, vibrated and
cured under controlled conditions all help to achieve a tighter
quality control. This is reflected in ACI provisions, where cover
requirements for plant cast concrete is reduced.
By telescoping the different activities on the critical path, time is
saved. The substantial reduction of formwork and falsework
required simplifies and eases the construction work at site.

For precast concrete to be economically viable there should be a certain

minimum number of repetitions of the moulds. Additionally the
components
t mustt be
b amenable
bl to
t mechanized
h i d methods
th d off production
d ti and
d
be reasonable convenient to handle and transport
Concrete is a relatively heavy material, mechanical equipment like overhead
cranes, gantry cranes, mobile cranes etc. are required for demoulding,
stacking and loading the elements.
During transport precast elements are usually supported at two points to
avoid undue strains. The elements need to be securely tied during the
transport phase. It may be pointed out that quite a few cracks in precast
elements form during transport. Further highway restrictions regarding size
and weight should be checked.
Use of precast concrete elements especially the large ones, means that
cranes would be required to hoist these in position. Adequate lifting
equipment and room should be available at site.

1. The reactions caused by the post-tensioning forces in continuous slabs or

beams are often referred to as secondary (hyperstatic) reactions.
2. The concept of secondary (hyperstatic) moments (also referred to as parasitic
moments) has been used for 40 years in the design of post-tensioned
members in indeterminate structures.

The calculation of the secondary moments or the determination of the line of

thrust (which are equivalent) can be done in several ways.

The most common method in use today is to determine the forces that the cable
exerts on the concrete and then to analyze the beam under those loads.

This can be done at several levels of detail; if the structure is analyzed as a beam,
the resulting bending moment will be the total effect of the cable (P.e) and the
reactions
reactions (which contribute to the secondary moments M).
M)

Using finite element analysis, the distribution of cables across the width and local
effects of cable profile distribution can also be determined.

Alternatively, for continuous beams, virtual work can be used to derive a set of
