In between the
pages 281-282
/ Part 6

We come across scene where

Kate goes through a series of
different feelings, it becomes
one of the few chapters where
she shares her feelings to her
audience.
Kate knows that that topic is
important so she expresses
her opinion.

This part of the novel has been

the first time she explains what
has happened, although she
struggles, when Daniel asks her.
She appears to place a
boundary like she always has
been doing to not respond to
him, instead; she seems to
open up more.

Understanding the
situation
What had happened
Marie mentions a few pages back that Matt
feels embarrassed and it matters to Matt the
opinion of Kate he assumes that she
thinks his life is a failure/ feeling sorry for him
for the way he let himself down. For not
going to collage the way she expected it.
Hardest thing for Matt is that he has to bare
Kate's disappointment about how he lives his
life compared to what he could have been.

But Maries accusations are false.

The significance

She cant run away from the

situation like she has with her
hometown. She feels
overwhelmed by Maries opinion,
making Kate distracted by it and
doesnt pay attention to reality.
Meaning that it affects her
personally. And she's also
bothered by it.
Kate truly admires her brother
Matt, but she knows that she
became what he could have been,
so she feels embarrassed more
than Matt does: according to her.

Kates reaction

In page 281 Kate thinks to herself,

Her accusations bothered me very
much I kept going over them
trying to understand how she had
come to think as she did

Kate believes that Matt would

choose obvious path to his life (one
she didnt expect), but because of
her personality and high education
status: she appears (according to
Marie) disappointed at him, which in
reality she's not, because she's just
covering up her feelings like she's
always does.
Kate feels disturbed by Maries
opinion
Reason #1: [Marie] would have no
conception of what Matts life could
have been like.
Reason #2: [Marie] had been the
cause of his downfall, after all.
Reason #3: Kate has never liked her
as a child or close to Matt.

Kates relationship
Kate is still detached from Daniel as if their
relationship didn't matter to her as much.
[which is not a healthy relationship]
Daniels concern to
Daniel repeats

totally clueless

Better or worse?

Kate doesnt know the

importance of telling Daniel
what she feels { }, reflecting no
interest plus she is clueless of
the significance of
communication in a
relationship.

Kates scientific opinion (Part 1)

Science is what had brought Kates understanding of the world we live in
to a whole new level, it has also increased the connection with her brother
Matt, but what about her scientific opinion on topics that are not related to
science?

[Marie] thinks that I

think what happened to
Matt is a tragedy
(page 281)

Which is true. [Marie] said that I

think Matts whole life is a failure,
which is not true, but it is true that
what happened to his is a tragedy.

Kates scientific opinion (Part 2)

Tragedy really?

REALITY
TRAGEDY: an event
causing great
suffering, destruction,
and distress, such as a
serious accident,
crime, or natural
catastrophe.

To her assumption and

understanding it is a tragedy not
going to go to university.
But the only thing she thinks of and
she possesses great love for is
science Life moves on and not
going to university or studying
science is totally a tragedy for her.

Daniels reasoning

Even Daniel says in page 182, I

can see it was a disappointment.
He had his chance and he blew it
which is a real shamebut its
just a shame. its not a tragedy.

He also says: Cant you see that?

No difference at all. The tragedy
is that you think its so important.
So important you're letting it
destroy the relationship you two
had (page 182 as well)

Daniel cares! Compared

to snobby Kate!

In conclusion...............
Kate is not making her relationship
better
Kate is not realistic

Kate doesnt like Marie

Kate has always a scientific point of
view
Kate still creates a barrier with herself
and other people
Kate creates a misconception of words
Science is very important (the only
important thing) for her.
