Constantin Brancusi

Who was he ?
Constantin Brncui is considered as one of the most iconic sculptors of the 20th century. His work explored the exemplify ideal
and archetypal representations of the subject. His sculptures were iconically simple aiming to explore reduced forms that idolised
the base lines of all his subjects. Brncusi worked directly with all his materials to the point of even pioneering the technique of
direct carving rather than working with such mediums as plaster and clay.
Brncusi believed that "the artist should know how to dig out the being that is within matter" he sought out to convey the true
nature of his subjects, be they people, objects or animals by expanding upon a highly simplified form of the subject.
The majority of his work was considered abstract however Brncui believed his work was a representation of the natural form,
disclosing an often concealed reality.
His work was largely influenced by folk law and myths from "primitive" cultures, which often built a unique contrast between the
smooth nature of his work, leading to a blend between modern representation and timeless history.
Brncui used bronze, stone, marble, would and metal and worked closely with these mediums.
