Reading Strategies and Skills

Unit 4 Week 3
Test Date: Tuesday, January 27, 2015
Test Date:
Comprehension Strategy: Summarize
-A play is a story written to be performed for an
audience. You are reading a story format that may be
less familiar than other genres.
-To check for understanding of plot events and
characters, summarize the story as you read.
-Summarizing is restating briefly, in your own words,
the most important ideas or event in a selection.
-As you read, pay attention to what the characters say
and do. Answer the questions: who, what, where, why,
and when.
-For extra practice, refer to Practice Workbook pages
173-174. Also refer to The RWW book page 270.

Genre: Drama
The following are key characteristics of a drama:
-It is a play written to be performed by actors.
- It may include casts of characters that appear at the
beginning of the script.
- It is divided into sections called acts and shorter
sections called scenes. The change of act or scene
indicated a change in setting.
- In the script, each character's dialogue-the words he or
she is speaking- is labeled with a character's name.
-The audience watches the play's plot unfold through
dialogue and actions of the characters. Stage
directions, often set off in italics and parenthesis,
describe the actions, setting, and character's feelings.
- For extra practice, refer to Practice Workbook page
176. Also refer to The RWW book page 272.

Vocabulary Strategy: Homophones

-Homophones are words that sound alike when
spoken, but have different meanings and often
different spellings.
Examples:
Sale/Sail
Heir/hair
Bred/Bread
-For extra practice, refer to Practice Workbook
page 177. Also refer to The RWW book p. 273 and
the Word Study Center.

Comprehension Skill: Theme

-The theme of a text is a statement or insight about life that the

author wants you to understand. Some examples are: True

friends are hard to find; Honesty is the best policy.
-These are rarely directly stated. You must find clues that
suggest a larger message about life.
-To determine the theme of a play, focus on the characters'
actions and speech and then think about what these might
reveal. Also consider how characters and plot events affect each
other. Ask What message or insight do these words and actions
suggest?
-For extra practice, refer to Practice Workbook pages 133-175.
Also refer to The RWW book page 271.
