OBJECTIVE: To show how different forces and angles affect motion.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
Computer
Phet Motion Application
Google Docs
Calculator
PROCEDURE:
1. Go to http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/ramp-forces-and-motion
2. Click the run now button to start the application
3. You will be starting with a crate that has a mass of 100 kg and a coefficient of
sliding friction of 0.3 and a coefficient of static friction of 0.5
4. Include all free body diagrams in your work
5. Edit mass of block, coefficient of kinetic friction, coefficient of static friction
and angle of ramp

Question 1

Question 2

Question 3

Question 4

No diagram needed

Question 5

Question 6-15

CALCULATIONS:

No diagram needed

Question
1-3

No equations needed

Question 4 Ff= FN= mg

Question
5-7

Ff= .5(100)(9.8)= 490N

No equations needed

Question 8 Fg=Ff; mg sin() = mg

cos()

sin(26)= cos(26)
= sin(26)/cos(26) = tan(26)
= .49

Question 9 Fg+Ff= Fapp; mg sin() =

mg cos()

mg sin(30) + mg cos(30) = Fapp

100(9.8) sin(30) + .3(100)(9.8) cos 30=
Fapp
Fapp= 744.6 N

Question
10

F sum = 0 = F net

Which means no acceleration which

means no constant speed

Question
11

Fnet = Fg - Ff; F net= mg

sin() = mg cos()
Vf^2 = Vi^2 + 2ax

Fnet= (100)(9.8)sin(30) - .3(100)(9.8)

cos(30)
Fnet= 235.4 N
Vf^2 = 0^2 + 2(2.354)(8.9)
Vf= 6.473 m/s

Question
12

Ff =mg

=.3(100)(9.8)
= 294 N -> negative direction

Question
13

F =ma

-294= 100a
a= -2.94m/s

Question
14

Vf^2= vi^2 + 2ax

0= (6.473)^2 + 2(-2.94)(x)
x=7.1m

Question
15:
Flat Part

Fapp= Ff =mg
ma= mg

361=(.287)(m)(9.8) m=128.4 kg
a=(9.8)
0^2 = (53.632- 147.3)+2(9.8) (-6.1)
53.632 = 266.86 k
k= .20

Ramp

Fnet = Fg - Ff
Vf^2= Vi^2 + 2ax

s= sin(16)/ cos(16) = tan(16)= .287

a=9.8sin(20)- k (9.8) cos 20
a= 3.352 - 9.21
Vf^2= 0^2 +2(3.352-9.21k)
Vf^2= 53.632- 147.3

RESULTS:

Question
2

Crate did not move

Question
3

Still didnt move

Question
4

The crate does not move at force of 490N but it does move at a force of
491N

Question
5

Crate slowed down and stopped halfway up the ramp. The force working
against the applied force is the parallel component of gravity

Question
6

It will not go as high up on the ramp as before. The force of gravity increases
so it slows down more.

Question
7

Crashes into wall at 15 degrees and goes up higher with less parallel force to
slow it down.

Question
8

= .49 close to .5

Question
9

Fapp= 744.6 N

Question
10

Which means no acceleration which means no constant speed

Question
11

Fnet= (100)(9.8)sin(30) - .3(100)(9.8) cos(30)

Fnet= 235.4 N
Vf^2 = 0^2 + 2(2.354)(8.9)
Vf= 6.473 m/s

Question
12

294N in a negative direction

Question
13

a= -2.94m/s

Question
14

Actually goes 7.0m

Question
15

m= 128.4kg

CONCLUSION:
We successfully answered all questions to the Phet Motion Lab. We have full body
diagrams showing how force affects objects on a flat surface and a ramp. Overall we
learned that there are many forces acting on one object and how forces work in
physics. The program was a fun application to introduce how many factors affect the
force on an object. A new type of object and angle can change how much force you
need to successfully push it. It was a challenging and interesting lab.
