Assignment 1: Information Literacy

Best Practice (BB): create the document and under each step type the answer.

1. Use the Internet to find a Technology current event article

Chosen Article: Smartphone Makers Need to Put an End to Distracted Driving
by Sarah Perez via techcrunch.com

2. Write a paragraph summarizing the article. (5 points)

In this article, the author, Sarah Perez, argues that the OS features on Apple mobile
devices easily distract drivers while theyre on the road. She expresses that Apple needs to
develop feature within the iOS system that may help limit the amount of distraction that may
occur while someone is trying. I tend to agree with her philosophy; nowadays its extremely easy
for me personally to quickly check my phone for updates while driving. Therefore for my own
safety, I wish there were more resourceful ways for drivers to get updates from their phones
without physically needing to check their phones while driving.

3. Find two additional Internet articles on the same topic. (4 points)

List the keywords you will use to do the search.

Distracted Driving Phones

Run the search on two different search engines.

Identify the search engines you used.
Compare the results from the two searches was one search engine better than the
other, why, how.

Google search result: What is Distracted Driving? via distraction.gov

CNN.com search result: Steering Teen Drivers out of Harms Way by Kelley
Wallace
My Thoughts: I think because of the popularity of this topic, most general search engines will
have an abundance of articles and essays all over the web. Therefore, I had no trouble finding
respectable articles on the selected topic.

4. TRAAP your sources. (8 points)

Evaluate one Internet article you found in step 3 by answering the following questions:
1. Time when was it written? Has it been updated?
- The distracted.gov essay did not have a specific publish date, but the dates of
the facts suggest that the essay has been updated within the last year.
- The cnn.com essay was published October 7th, 2014, which makes this article
efficiently up to date.
2. Relevance does it relate to your topic or answer your question?
- The distracted.gov article broadly talked about the various types of
distractions that may affect drivers while on the road. I mainly wanted
information on distractions from mobile devices.
- The cnn.com article concentrated on teenagers using cell phones while
driving. This article appealed more towards me because I am still a teenager,
and I too face distractions from my cellphone.
3. Authority who is the author(s)? Are they qualified to write about this topic? How do
you know?
-The author of the distraction.gov article is unknown, but this website is the
official U.S. government website for distracted driving. Therefore this is
definitely a respectable article.
- The author of the cnn.com article is Kelly Wallace. She is a part of the CNN
reporting staff which also makes this article a quality source of information.
4. Accurate is the information trustworthy? Is it supported by evidence? Has it been
tested for accuracy?
- The distraction.gov article listed multiple stats from various issues over
time. As stated, this is a U.S. government website; therefore its required that their
information is true for the well-being of U.S. citizens.
- The information from the cnn.com article were from actual test with teen
drivers, which was also stated in the essay. There are also statistics from other
accidents and events involving teenage distracted driving
5. Purpose why was it written, to inform, sell, persuade? Is there a bias or is the material
objective?
Both of these articles have a mission to put an end to distracted driving. The
cnn.com article more so focused teenage drivers.

5. Find two scholarly journal articles on the same topic from the CCBC library
databases. (4 points)

List the keywords you used to find the articles.

Distracted Driving Mobile
Identify the database you used.
CCBC Libraries Search Engine and the ProQuest search engine via CCBC

Justify the choice of the database used.

The ProQuest search engine was a great source for scholarly articles dealing with
common issues in todays world.

6. Compare the Internet and Journal articles. (5 points)

Write a paragraph comparing one Internet article and one journal article based on the
following:
Ease of access
In terms of the effort that was required to find articles on the entire internet, I
found three articles in no time. As for the scholarly journals found through CCBCs
libraries, I had to sign into my student account in order to find the articles.
However because of the popularity of my topic, finding accurate articles was
generally easy.
Timeliness
All of the articles found from the internet were updated and published within the
last year; which means that the statistics and idea are relevant to todays society.
One of the academic journals was published in January of 2014, and the other was
published in November of 2010. Therefore one of these journals can be used as an
up to date source of information.
Authority

The interesting fact about all of the articles that I found via the internet
and CCBCs library database is that there all relevant for the most part, and
they come from respectable sources.
