REFLECTION
We chose this topic "Food and Drinks" because it is a basic topic that should be
known. After 4th grade students have learned this topic, they will be able to
categorize food and drinks. They will differentiate uncountable nouns from countable
nouns. They can ask questions by using "How many/ How much/ Is there/ Are there.
They will have enough information about quantifiers.
We have difficulty in the first step of ASSURE model, analyzing learners, because
we do not have real students, so we do not know their previous knowledge about the
topic.
We arrange many activities such as; question-answer, group-work, making a
flashcard and so on to reinforce subjects. Thanks to these activities, students can use
their information in daily life. For instance, they will be able to communicate when
they need to order something in a canteen or at a restaurant. In conclusion, activities
are appropriate and useful for meeting the learning outcomes.
While we are covering the unit and preparing lesson plans, we take ASSURE model
into consideration. First of all, we pay attention to background knowledge and abilities
of students. In order to learn this topic, they have to know previous topics. To cover
this topic, we think that 12 hours is enough and appropriate process.
According to ASSURE model, firstly we analyze learners to determine their learning
styles because every student has different learning types from one another. Therefore,
we try to use audio, visual, text, media literacy as much as possible. Then, we state
standards and learning objectives. While we are discussing objectives, we use the
ABCD (Audience, Behavior, Condition and Degree) model of writing objectives. We
write objectives according to students' knowledge level and their ages.
After we have analyzed our learners and stated the standards and objectives, we
determined the strategies, technology, media and materials in such a way that they
can be useful for the students. We choose concept maps in order to introduce the
topics that we will cover in the classroom to the students; visual presentations to
make the topic more understandable; animations to make the lesson interesting and
enjoyable and we prepare a survey for evaluation of the students progress.
Our instructional activities are based on presentations, games, listening activities,
drill and practice. We try to use an eclectic approach including the examples of TPR
and natural approach. We think that these learning theories are the most appropriate
ones for our topic because these theories aim to create a stress-free environment for
learning and students are more active.
Then we planned to utilize these media, methods and instructions. We use these
media, method and instructions to reinforce and practice the topic, and to evaluate
the learners. We also use media to make the lesson enjoyable.
We encouraged them to be active in lesson by providing activities such as group
exercises, games, dialogues and hand-on activities. We try to use Web 2.0 tools to
make the lesson understandable, interesting, effective and to increase students'
participation.
As the last step of ASSURE model, after implementing of the lesson, we try to
evaluate whether students have improved their whole learning process or not.
Therefore, we prepare a quiz which includes multiple choices questions. We also
evaluate the students according to their homework and participation by giving
feedback.
