Homework Bags-Mrs. Wetzels Class
This is the first year we have sent home weekly homework bags that include books. We think
its a great combination of paper practice and reading. We hope you and your kindergartener
are completing the homework with ease and enjoying the books as well.
Please support your child with homework in the following ways:
1. Read the book everyday Monday-Thursday. After reading, return the book to the bag for
safe keeping. Your child can read it with you, to you, or by him/herself.
2. Do ONLY ONE page of homework each night.
3. Check over the homework and sign your name on the packet cover sheet.
4. Encourage and expect quality work from your child. Homework should be completed
entirely, with pencil, and neatly.
5. Turn in the completed homework packet and book inside the bag every Friday. If your child
does not return a book he/she will receive only paper copies until the book is returned.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Phonics
At this point in the school year most students are ready to begin blending sounds or syllables
together in order to read and write words. Please encourage your child to read and write
words on his/her own by slowly blending individual sounds or syllables together. If you are
interested in activities or materials that you could use at home with your child please contact
your teacher. We are always happy to share ideas!

Writing
We will continue to practice invented spelling by writing words according to the sounds we
hear in them. We will also practice using appropriate article-noun agreement in Spanish when
we write. We will practice using: el/la, los/las, and un/una. A couple of our writing topics
for January include winter clothing, winter activities, and animal habitats.
Science
We will be studying animal habitats during the month of January. The students will learn that
animals live on land, in water, in hot places, or in cold places. In addition, they will learn about
certain characteristics of animals that help them survive in their habitats.
Math
This month we will be playing lots of dice and domino games to foster the students number
sense skills. We will especially focus on the concepts of: more/less/equal, greater than/less
than, and one more/one less. As always, we will continue to practice counting orally, counting
objects with one-to-one correspondence, skip counting by tens and fives, recognizing
numerals, writing numerals, and patterning. Finally, we will do more practice with addition
facts and word problems. Please see the vocabulary words below and use them when possible
with your child. Any math thinking that you can incorporate in conversation with your child is
very beneficial.

Escritura
