BSNL

HISTORY
BSNL was set up by the Government of India to upgrade the quality of telecom
services, expand the telecom network, introduce new services and to raise revenue
for telecom development needs of India’s key metros – Delhi, the political capital
and Mumbai, the business capital of India. In the past 19 years, the company has
taken rapid strides to emerge as India’s leading and one of Asia’s largest telecom
operating companies. Besides having a strong financial base, BSNL has achieved a
customer base of over 5 million.

Performance
The total revenue in the telecom service sector was Rs. 86,720 crore in 2005-06 as
against Rs. 71, 674 crore in 2004-2005, registering a growth of 21%.
The total investment in the telecom services sector reached Rs. 200,660 crore in
2005-06, up from Rs. 178,831 crore in the previous fiscal.
Shareholding Pattern
The Govt. of India currently holds 56.25% stake in the company.
Coverage
Almost whole of the nation.
The company has also received the “Navratna” status.
Certifications
• BSNL adds one more feather to its cap. Centre for Excellence in Telecom
Technology & Management (CETTM) has been awarded with the ISO
9001: 2000 Certification for providing training in the field of Telecom
Technology & Management.
• BSNL's Centre for Excellence in Telecom Technology and Management
received ISO 9001-2000 certification on 4th July, 2005. This quality
certification is the first step in developing CETTM as a world class training
centre."
• BSNL with a market share of about 13% of the National Telecom Network has
a customer base of about 4.98 million lines at the end of 2002-03.

Competitors in the Market

As on Apr 2007 India has 167 million mobile phone subscribers. Out of this 125
million are GSM users and 41 million CDMA users.
BSNL, Bharti Airtel, Hutch, Idea, Aircel, Spice and MTNL are the main GSM
providers in India.
Reliance Communications and Tata Indicom are the main CDMA providers in India.
