HOW TO USE THIS BOOK This book is a series of programmed project lessons designed to give the bandoneon student a regimented program to develop right hand technique, as well as improve his chordal Playing by improvising lines with arpeggios over a pre-recorded set of chords. Why improvising? In most cases, the violin or piano student is working from music which was written by someone else. The psychology behind his studies put him in a relatively safe Place. "If you don’t like it, don’t blame me. Paganini wrote it; | didn’t’. The improvisor, however, faces the risk of criticism not only of his technique, but of his choice as well. This working condition can create a double bind effect, causing a sort of mental paralysis which quickly translates into an inability to carry out the motor skill. It is toward the resolution of this problem that this book is directed. In addition, those bandoneon players who already have an established technique will find this book useful to maintain it. Doing the project lessons as outlined in the book, 50 minutes per day, 6 days a week, will keep your chops in shape during the periods when you are not actively playing. This program has been tested in numerous individual situations, and without exception has worked for those who actually followed through an did the work as it is laid out here. Read the instructions carefully. Follow the directions. Do the work an it will work for you too. The Open/Closing dilemma As you will see pretty soon, all the arpeggios included in this book have fingerings for OPEN only. Itis my intention that you investigate and use the charts to write down the CLOSE fingerings for yourself. This activity will give the right tools to know better the keyboards in all directions and will develop a good habit on the long term. PRELIMINARY STUDIES The exercises comprising the main boy of this book consist of selected chord progressions representing common harmonic movements. They reflect a broad cross-section of chord progressions common to the diatonic system, the kind of progression we must deal with on a daily basis. But before you can start with the SUPERCHOPS PROGRAM, you should exercise carefully the first section of this book: the ARPEGGIOS. The arpeggios are divided on MAJOR, MINOR, DOMINANT, HALF DIMINISHED and DIMINISHED, in all 12 keys. | have written down the suggested fingerings for those arpeggios OPENING, but you must take your time and try to play them CLOSING too, and if possible, write down the fingering on the same charts. Once you feel you can play the arpeggios UP and DOWN with acceptable dexterity, you can step forward to the 5 weeks program. So, go to the first section and check how you manage the arpeggios. The program is made up of a series of project lessons, each lasting 50 minutes per day, running six consecutively days per week, with one day off. The objective is to gradually increase the tempo over the course of 5 weeks (30 days) maintaining precision and accuracy at all times. B. Equipment. In order to start the program you will need: 1. Your bandloneon, which must be on mint conditions. Try to keep it on tune and listen to any “flaws' caused by dry leathers or leaks problems on the belly 2. A metronome, which you will put nearby the recording system, so you can use it as a click track. 3. A playback recording system (tape, minidisc, reel-to-reel, computer, etc) 4. An alarm clock or timer. You'll need to pre-record yourself for 10 minutes, so it will be a good idea to have a timer close so you'll know when to stop! C. Once you have pre-recorded the chord progression of the lesson you are on, you will need arpeggios to play over with eight-notes. | have written tonal key centers over the chords so you know which arpeggios you should play. Anyways, you can also investigate by playing other arpeggios or “substitutions' D. If you complete the program and want to increase difficulty, you can start it again and play eight-notes triplets instead of eight-notes. E. Line Shaping. In that the studies of this book are deliberately limited to rhytms uninterrupted duple or triple time, interesting rhythmic figures or motifs cannot be used to brighten the solo lines. Therefore, your choice of melodic tone sequences will become the major devide for creating interesting lines. | recommend you to use some basic line shaping elements like arpeggios, interval skips, common tones, major and minor scales and sometimes, the chromatic scale. NOTE: think of this program as training with the Chicago Bulls, as compared to joining a health spa. Trust the program. Do the work exactly as prescribed. then stand back and watch it work. You should see dramatic progress at the end of the 5 weeks. Week one / Project lesson 1-A Preparation Step 1 Clear your work area of all things not pertaining to this lesson.
