Course Description
Business finance is intended as the introductory finance course. Business Finance
encompasses the organization and financing of the business enterprise, types of
securities and their utilization in proportioning income, risk, and control; financial
analysis and forecasting, working capital management, selection of long term
investments and determining the cost of capital; use of financial institutions for
obtaining funds. This survey focuses on basic ideas of ethical management,
accounting statements, security markets, taxes, risk analysis, time value of money,
and basic security valuation. This primary goal of the course is to apply financial
theory to real world problems to improve decision-making. A second goal is to provide
opportunities to develop operational adequacy with finance applications. Delivery is
intense and students must prepare to study and practice more than other courses in the
business curriculum to develop proficiency. The focus is on developing competencies in

the recognition and application of finance concepts to topics including the time
value of money, projecting and interpreting proforma financial statements, dividend
theory, capital structure theory, determining the weighted average cost of capital as
well as the ability to recognize unethical behavior and to use collected data to
support recommend corrective actions.
