CHANGING STATES OF

MATTER

Changing states of matter

As we all know matter has 4 states

which are Solids, Liquids, Gases &
plasma .

You can change from one state of matter

to the other by heating or cooling.

Heating ..
When you heat , you give the molecules energy so
you change from
Solid liquid Gas

When we change form solids to liquids we call this

process . Melting ( like melting of ice into
water).

When we change form liquids to gases we call this

processEvaporation ( like evaporation of water
into water vapor).

Cooling ..
When you cool , you take away energy so you
change from one state to matter to the other,
Gases Liquids Solids

When you change from gas to liquid, we call this

process .. Condensation ( like the condensation of
water vapor into water droplets on a cold mirror)

When we change from liquid to solid , we call this

process Freezing ( liquid freezing of liquid water
into ice )

Water soluble solids

Some solids like sugar and salt can

dissolve in water.
To dissolve in water means that the
molecules of these solids can completely
mix & disappear between the molecules
of water so we cant see them anymore
but they are still there.
Water soluble solids form a solution in
water.
We can separate them from water by
evaporating the water then

Water insoluble solids

Some solids like sand are water

insoluble.
This means that they cant dissolve and
disappear between water molecules
because their particles are too big.
They DONT form a solution.
We can separate them from water by
filtration or decantation of water.

Remember !

When a solid dissolves in water , it

forms a solution & we call this solid..
Water soluble

When a solid doesnt dissolve in

water , it cant form a solution & we call
this solid.. water insoluble

We can separate an insoluble solid from

water by

How about water soluble

solids

We can separate them form water by :

Evaporation then Condensation

Evaporation ..we heat the water so the liquid water

converts into water vapor gas while the insoluble solid
remains in the container.
Only the water can evaporate & not the solid because
the solid particles are too heavy to escape from the
solution
Then we do Condensation.. We cool the water vapor so it
becomes liquid water again & we can collect it in a separate
container.

this is how we can get pure water from a

solution !

This is how the water cycle

goes

The water cycle ( rain cycle) also

depends on
Evaporation then condensation
of water
