A Long History of Diversity:


1. In a paragraph, explain how the early history [prior to 1000 AD] was highly
diversified.
There were many different regions that had influences on Southeast Asia but they
continued to stay upon their own path. The two main factoring countries in the
creature of Southeast Asia where India and China. These two countries were able to
spread Hinduism and Buddhism all throughout Southeast Asia. In the end, Southeast
Asia was influenced by many different people and were very diverse.
2. How was the area of Southeast Asia organized and governed during their early
history?
In its early history, Southeast Asia did not have borders, instead there were
mandalas. These were states that organized rings of power over certain parts of the
region.
3. How did this change from 1300-1800?
The way the regions was not changed but instead the complexity of the regions
was. The trade done within the regions was more important than any other time in
Southeast Asias history and it held their economy together.
Colonialism and its aftermath
1. What is colonialism?
This was the time when the Europeans came to Southeast Asia to try and obtain
wealth. This started the use of many rules and regulations throughout the regions.
2. What was the only country in the region that wasnt a colony?
Siam was the only area that was an independent state.
3. Identify and explain the three ways colonialism changed Southeast Asia.
First, there were more rules and regulations. Secondly, Colonists set up centralized
governments throughout the region. Then people received a westernized education.

Japan arrived and would explore for resources.

Many nations got freedom peacefully and without fighting except Indonesia who
had to fight.
An Uneven Economy
1. Southeast Asia has a traditional economy. Explain that statement with
specific examples to back it up.
With a lack of industry, they depend on crops like rice since they have very fertile
soil.
2. What is ASEAN? How has it helped to create a region within a region?
Association of Southeast Asian Nations that promote growth within the region.
A Rich Mosaic of Culture
1. How is this area a mosaic of religions? Identify the different religions and
where they are practiced.
It is a mosaic because many religions are practiced there like Christianity in the
Philippines and Indonesia, who are Muslim.
2. Are there more rural or urban communities in this area?
With the present rapid urban growth rate, there are more urban cities.
3. Interpret the picture of page 709. What does this scene show about
diversity in Malaysia?
It shows how different people are from one another because of religion and their
traditions.

1. Identify these terms and explain their importance in the region:
1. Micronesia- tiny islands
2. Melanesia- black islands
3. Polynesia- many islands
4. Subsistence activities- Activities that the family does for themselves.
For example, they make food, shelter, and clothing for themselves.
5. Copra- Dried meats of coconuts
6. Taro- Major Crop that has a starchy root and can be made into bread
or pudding. It can also be boiled and eaten by itself.

2. What type of migration is happening within Oceania today?
Rapid Urban growth is occurring in Oceania right now.
3. How did contact with Europeans and Americans affect the societies of the
Pacific Islands?

The traditional roots were taking over by the western ways and Europe and U.S
made the islands territories and possessions. This is how contact affected
societies.
4. What is distinctive about Oceania in terms of its languages?
It is one of the most linguistically diverse regions in the world with 1,100 of the
worlds languages being spoken there.
5. How has modern technology both helped and harmed Oceania?
It is pulling people away from their traditional way of life as well as the islands are
linked together.

1. What prevents Australia from benefiting completely from its mining
industry?
Many deposits lay in the outback and far from cities it is very expensive to build
roads and buildings that are needed for the mine to work.
2. What historic actions demonstrated New Zealanders concern for equal
rights and social welfare?
They granted the right to vote to women of legal ages and gave pensions to senior
citizens.
3. What is the major activity conducted in Antarctica?
They did many different things including mining and producing wool and paper
products.
