Red hawks lab

Amrith Bhaskaran, Nischal $hankar

Abstract

The purpose of this experiment is to find out

the different indicators of a chemical reaction.
This lab is important because it teaches
students how not all chemical reactions are
the same. Our hypothesis was that a solid and
a liquid would need to be combined to make a
chemical reaction. The substances we used
consisted of two solids (calcium chloride and
baking soda) and two liquids (water and
phenol red). We tried all possible combinations
of the four substances. While the
combinations of a solid and liquid created a
reaction, two solids did not. The different
reactions that were created were change in
color, change in temperature, and formation of
a gas. This experiment is important because
the student will know the indicators of a
chemical reaction and will know that they have
to be cautious around those substances. After
thoroughly conducting this experiment our
hypothesis was proven correct.

Methods
Our group took the three given
substances and mixed them in pairs in
Ziploc bags. Then we observed the
reactions produced. We gathered our
information by recording the reactions
of each pair and then recording it on a
chart.
After, we made a detailed conclusion on
what we saw during the lab and on the
data that we meticulously collected.
The students who conducted this lab,
Amrith and Nischal, were very
responsible and organized. These
characteristics allowed them to succeed
in doing an excellent job on the lab.

Results
In our assessment we found out that the
indicators of a chemical reaction are
fizzing, bubbling, the production of heat
and the release of gasses. Based on the
data calcium chloride and phenol red
created a increase in temperature and
bubbles. Calcium chloride baking soda
and water created fizzing.

Objectives

The specific aims of this project was to

identify the different indicators of a
chemical reaction. We also tried to find a
universal way to identify chemical
reactions. The chemical reactions were
also affected by the substances we used.
We tried to figure out what combination
of substances made chemical reactions.
We were trying to gather information on
the reactions made by combining
calcium chloride, baking soda, phenol
red, and water.

Conclusions
We found out that each substance in this
lab plays a small part in creating an
indicator. The implication of this project are
that each substance does a small part in
creating a reaction. In the course of our
research we found out the indicators of a
chemical reaction
The students of the class will benefit from
this project because now they can
successfully Identify chemical reactions.
Possible next steps for this project would
be to do this experiment with different
chemicals to verify our research.
