GRENADA STAGES 2004 CONCACAF CONGRESS

The XXIV CONCACAF Ordinary Congress will take place at

the Grenada Trade Center in St. George's, Grenada on 2 May.
The 2004 CONCACAF Congress attendees include delegates
from each of CONCACAF's 40 member nations along with invited
guests from the global football family.

"This is the year in which we celebrate the visionaries of

the our beautiful game and, in our case, we do so on the
beautiful island of Grenada where our 40 National Associations and countless
important visitors from the football world-at-large now congregate," said
CONCACAF President Jack A. Warner. "A gathering of 40 nations and territories some vast, some tiny, speaking different languages, with many cultures and
colours, but bound together by a common gameand bound, moreover to the
rest of mankind through football."
Immediately before the business of the XXIV Ordinary Congress, three
African nations, Egypt, Morocco and South Africa will make presentations of
their respective bids to host the FIFA World Cup 2010.
The XXIV Ordinary CONCACAF Congress includes elections to positions on
the respective Executive Committees of CONCACAF and FIFA. Rafael Salguero
of Guatemala (Vice-President-Central American Zone), Guillermo Caedo of
Mexico (Member - North American Zone) and Captain Horace Burrell of Jamaica
(Member - Caribbean Zone) seek election to the CONCACAF Exco, while
CONCACAF President Jack Warner and General Secretary Chuck Blazer stand
unopposed for another four-year term as FIFA Executive Committee members.
The 2004 Congress weekend begins on the evening of 30 April with a welcome reception and dinner. The next day a Planning Workshop will be held for
National Associations organised by the FIFA Development Office in Port of Spain.
The CONCACAF Hall of Fame Dinner is scheduled for the evening of 1 May
and will see the induction of Mavis Derflinger (USA) and Hubert Trump (ARU)
as well as a special award to be granted to The Football Association.
At the conclusion of the 2004 CONCACAF Congress a Centennial Luncheon and
Beach party will be held celebrating 100 years of FIFA. Also that evening an international match will take place at the St. George's National Stadium with
Morocco facing a Caribbean All-Star team.

NEW LOGO

The 2004 Congress will unveil a

new CONCACAF logo that forms part
of a new visual identity developed
for CONCACAF.
"As CONCACAF enters a very exciting period it is essential that our
visual identity should become uniformly applied and this new visual
identity will provide CONCACAF with
a strong and distinctive public face
for many years to come," said Chuck
Blazer, CONCACAF General Secretary.

CONCACAF confirmed last month the

Series between the
North Zone and UNCAF (Unin
Centroamericana de Ftbol).
The CONCACAF Futsal Qualification
Preliminaries has three UNCAF nations
(El Salvador, Honduras, Panama) meeting three North Zone teams (Canada,
Mexico, USA) in three pairings consisting of two-games with the matches to
take place in a single venue.
Series 1 has Panama hosting
Canada at the Gimnasio Roberto Duran
in Ciudad de Panam on 21 and 22
May 2004, while El Salvador visits
Mexico in Series 2 at the Gimnasio
Carlos Martnez Balmori in Pachuca,
Hidalgo on 20 and 22 May.
The Series 3 match-up has the USA
greeting Honduras at the US Cellular
Arena in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 18
and 20 May.
The three North/Central
Preliminary Series winners will
advance to the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal
Final Round Qualification in July,
along with Cuba, three more qualifiers
from the Caribbean Football Union
Tournament and the host, Costa Rica.
The eight-team CONCACAF Final
Round will qualify two nations to the
2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship
to be held in Chinese Taipei from 21
November - 5 December.

FIELD SET FOR 2004 CONCACAF UNDER-19

FINAL ROUND QUALIFICATION
The field is set for the 2004 CONCACAF Under-19 Women's
Final Round Qualification that will take place in Canada from 28
May - 6 June.
The host, Canada, is in Group A along with Mexico, Panama
and Jamaica, while the defending FIFA U-19 World Champions,
USA will compete in Group B along side Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago and
Dominican Republic at the CONCACAF event.
The eight-team tournament in Ottawa's Frank Clair Stadium and Montreal's
McGill University Molson Stadium in Canada will qualify two CONCACAF nations
to the 2004 FIFA U-19 World Championship in Thailand from 10-27 November.
This is the second time that CONCACAF has staged a qualifying event for the
U-19 World Championship the previous one held in 2002 in Trinidad & Tobago.

CFU LAUNCHES MARKETING DIVISION

The marketing division of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU)
was officially launched with a gala opening function at the Pegasus
Hotel on 7 March, in the presence of CONCACAF President Jack
Warner, other association presidents, Jamaican Government ministers and other football dignitaries from the CFU and CONCACAF.
The gala opening was followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony
at the offices of the Marketing Division in Kingston, Jamaica.
Captain Horace
Keynote speaker at the launch ceremony was Mr. Warner who
Burrell
said that in the midst of the CFU's twenty-fifth anniversary celebrations, the addition of its marketing arm now left a great deal to look
forward to in the future.
Warner, a FIFA Vice President a President of both CONCACAF and the CFU,
outlined and explained reasons for the forming of the Marketing Division which
was met with approval from all present at the launch.
"Through this newly formed marketing division under the astute leadership
of Captain Horace Burrell and his dedicated staff, we in the Caribbean now
have to harness the commercial energies of the region for the benefit of
football," Warner added.
Head of the Marketing Division, Jamaican Captain Horace Burrell, echoed
similar sentiments to Warner. "Over the years we have always strived to develop
football in the Caribbean and I am very happy that Jamaica has played a lead
role in this respect. To have this office sited in Jamaica is a tremendous honour."

COSTA RICAN CLUBS TO PLAY THE

2004 CHAMPIONS CUP FINAL
For the third consecutive year, two
teams from the same country will play for
the CONCACAF Champions Cup, but it is the
Champions'
first time with just Costa Rican clubs, as

Deportivo Saprissa and LD Alajuelense
earned their berths to the 2004 Finale after winning their
respective semifinal series on 21 April.
Despite losing 2:1 to the host Chicago Fire (USA) in the
second-leg, Deportivo Saprissa won the series 3:2 on
aggregate on 21 April at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.
At the Estadio Tecnologico in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon
Mexico, a crowd of 30,000 saw visiting LD Alajuelense hold
CF Monterrey (MEX) to a 1:1 tie after two overtime periods
in the second-leg encounter and claim the 2004 Champions
Cup Semifinal Series 2:1 on aggregate.
Two-time Champions Cup Winners (1993, 1995)
Deportivo Saprissa will host the first-leg of the 2004 Final
Series scheduled for 5 May, while LD Alajuelense, who hasnt won the CONCACAF title since 1986, will stage the second-leg on 12 May.
The CONCACAF Champions Cup is the longest running
international club competition in the region and has
crowned the champion club of the Confederation since its
inception in 1962.

The USA won the Pre-Olympic
Tournament on 5 March after
defeating Mexico in the finals 3:2 at the Estadio Eladio
Rosabal Cordero in Heredia, Costa Rica. In an earlier
game, Canada topped Costa Rica 4:0 for third-place.

The two nations topping each of

the semifinal groups will enter a final
round group of six teams.
This final group will play home-andaway fixtures from 9 February - 12
October 2005 at which point the top
three will advance directly to the 2006
FIFA World Cup in Germany.
The CONCACAF fourth-place finisher will compete in a home-and-away
playoff against fifth-place finisher
from the Asian Football Confederation,
for one of the last berths into the
event. These games will take place in
November 2005.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE STAGES COACHING COURSE

The Dr. Joo Havelange Centre of Excellence in Trinidad
& Tobago staged another successful course as The FA
(The Football Association) International Coaching License
Course ended on a high note on 25 March with the
participating coaches claiming that it was "the best ever."
Thirty-coaches from 18 CONCACAF countries attended
the nine-day course, which included both written and practical examinations.
Caribbean Football Union General Secretary, Harold
Taylor, expressed his gratitude to The FA for their continuing
support of the CONCACAF Development Programme.
"I want to say thanks to FA Instructors' Roger Soper and
Steve Rutter for the great job they are doing and I also
want to thank The FA for their continuing support of
CONCACAF. It is a relationship that continues to grow from
strength to strength every year," said Taylor.
FIFA WORKSHOP TAKES PLACE IN ARUBA
FIFA Development Officer, Keith Look Loy, conducted a
long term planning workshop on the island of Aruba from
10-11 March.
The workshop was attended by top officials of the
national association, Arubaanse Voetbal Bond, and a wide
cross-section of the Aruba football family, including coaches, referees, administrators and the media, as well as representatives of the Aruba Sports Union and the island's
Ministry of Sport.

The workshop was part of FIFA's GOAL

Programme, which requires all participating
national associations to implement a long
term development plan that addresses ten
key areas of the game, including planning
and administration, youth and women's
football, technical development, marketing
and media and medical matters.
RAMN MARADIAGA NAMED GUATEMALA COACH
The Honduran native, Ramn Maradiaga has been named
technical director for Guatemala it was announced by
Rafael Salguero, who presides over the FIFA-appointed commission that are working with the recently reinstated
Federacin de Ftbol de Guatemala.
Maradiaga, who was at the helm of Victoria of Honduras'
Liga Profesional, was the technical director of Honduras
during the 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Maradiaga who also played for Honduras at the 1982 FIFA
World Cup, will lead the chapines as they prepare for the
upcoming CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers in June 2004.
COSTA RICA & MEXICO PREPARE FOR 2004 COPA AMRICA
Costa Rica and Mexico know their respective opponents
at the 2004 Copa Amrica that will take place in Peru from
6-25 July, following the draw for the 12-team tournament
that was held in Lima last March.
Mexico has been placed in Group B alongside Argentina,
Ecuador and Uruguay, while Costa Rica is in Group C with
Brazil, Chile and Paraguay. Group A is composed of Bolivia,
Colombia, Venezuela and the host, Peru.
