Preparation
Prerequisites: What do students need to know prior to this lesson?
Students need to know how to search for information through reputable sources.
Context: Where does this lesson come in the unit?
This lesson will come into the beginning of the school year because it requires vital information for future
lessons and assignments.
Vocabulary: What concepts will be learned or reinforced in this lesson? How will you make the concepts
development part of the lesson?
Principles and Elements of Design vocabulary through research, evaluation, experiments and
assessments. This is important for the students to understand because it is the basis of all creations of
art.
Materials: What resources are needed to make this lesson successful? What will you need to prepare in
advance?
Assignment with step by step instructions and requirements. Vocabulary worksheet with fill in blanks.
Rubrics. Computers. Search list. I will need to prepare all paperwork. Create accommodated lessons for
students needing more help. Also, I will need to assign a time for renting out computers for all students to

use.

Objectives or Learner Outcomes

How will the learning be measured and assessed?

General Goal(s):
Students will learn how to analyze, research and assess vocabulary. Learn or strengthen their research
skills. Create an interesting presentation to teach to the class using the vocabulary list. They will
understand how to use the principles and elements of art.
Specific Performance-Based Objectives:
Students will work in pairs to discover and research the principles and elements of art. They will fill out the
vocabulary paperwork and then create an interesting way to present their findings.

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In)

An "attention getter" to focus students learning? A discussion or activity to activate students prior
knowledge?
In groups students will need to think of as many different careers or jobs that require some sort of art form
in the workforce. The group with the most correct answers will win. This acts as a discussion in how art is
important in our daily lives.
OR
Students will choose a picture they like from a handful of slides. They are to talk with a partner to why
they think they like the art piece they chose. They will use their prior knowledge and intuition about what
they think about art.

Step-By-Step Procedures
Instruction: List procedures for what will happen first, second, and so on to teach what you expect the
students to learn. EL strategies should include some consideration of language development.
After the anticipatory set, students will pick a partner they want to work with for the assignment. Students
will receive a vocabulary worksheet they will need to fill out. Once they find the information they will
receive another worksheet with the assignment with requirements. Students will need to find a way to
explain one of the principles or elements of art in an interesting way. They will need to include a definition,
3 art piece examples from past artists. And their own examples.
EL students will have vocabulary worksheets that are translated into their language. Students will need to
be paired with a person that will strengthen their understanding.
Guided Practice (2-3 sentences): What activities will the students engage in to practice the learning?
Include some time when the students are working with partners or in small groups. Be sure to include how
you will check for understanding throughout each stage of your lesson. Write out high level and/or openended questions to ask throughout your lesson.
Students will work on their worksheets. Fill out outlines of their findings and present what they know in
their own artwork in pairs. After research they are to create their own works of art. Assessments on their
vocabulary worksheets will be noted. Students will create a PowerPoint in their assigned principle or
element of art. Then as a class we will demonstrate the different ways to adding each element. Students
will be asked to think of their own ways in creating artwork that uses at least 3 or 4 elements and

principles.
Lesson Extension (advanced students): What activities or alternatives will you provide for those who
finish early and want to explore the topic more?
Students who finish early will be asked to create a more complex composition using the information they
have learned with the principles and elements of art.
Adaptations (For Students With Learning Disabilities):
Students will have easier worksheets for matching the vocabulary word to the picture or will have more
time to work on the assignment with guided assistance. Use of computer time and other accommodations
will be offered.
Connections (to other subjects)
This assignment will touch the basis of history, art history, culture, and science. Because art can be used
in any other context it will be fairly easy to make the connections.

Independent Practice
What will you do to have students practice the learning independently?
Students will have time to create their own artwork using their knowledge they have learned from the
vocabulary worksheet, presentation and other research. They will also have homework to quizlets that will
encourage their learning in homework.

Closure
Reflect on Anticipatory Set
Students will be able to understand how important art is to our world and how we use art to communicate,
learn and express ourselves and our businesses. When students come up with their own ideas in how art
is important, they will be more motivated and see the relevance it has to their life.
