NativeAustraliansbeganpaintingrockwallsfiftythousand
yearsago;earlyEuropeanswouldnotdecoratethecavesfor
another35thousandyears.
TraditionalAboriginalartwasimmenselyvaried.Inthe
north,groupsmadeelaborateXraypaintingsofanimal
skeletonsonbarkandrock.Inthenorthwest,theyadornedcave
wallswithimagesofWanjina,spiritualbeingswithhugeeyes
andnomouths.Thesepowerfulcreatures,itwasbelieved,
observedallthingsbutpassednojudgments.
The Dreaming
Groundpaintings,acommunaleffort,werefashioneddirectly
onthesand.
Theyweremadeduringsecretritesthatcelebratedthecreation
ancestorssupernaturalbeingswhowerethoughttohaveformed
everydetailofthelandscape,fromsandhillroriverbank.
EachAborigineinheritedresponsibilityforaparticular
Dreamingstoryandtheparceloflandonwhichittookplace.
Thistypeofpaintinginvolvedthousandsofdotsandafterthe
ceremonywasover,thepaintingwasdestroyed.
