What Will We Be Doing in January????

January is an exciting time in Kindergarten! It always amazes me when the children
return from break because they seem so much older and so much more experienced with
school. January is often a big turning point for Kindergarten students as well. Alphabet
sounds seem to just click and many children are ready to read. It really is exciting!!! So
heres what will whats going on in January...
Literacy
Literacy is one of the most important components of our Kindergarten program. In
January we will continue to review our letters and sounds; really one of the main literacy
goals in Kindergarten.
Our main theme in January will be Winter. In the past weve learned about Penguins but
Im really listening to the childrens interests so well see where they want to go. So far
they are interested in skating and igloos! This will include reading and writing non-fiction
texts (information books). We will be learning about labeling pictures and using the table
of contents. When you are reading books at home, point out the table of contents and
labeled pictures.
Religion
We begin each day with Religion class. However, the main goal of Religion is teaching
the Golden Rule (treat others as you would like to be treated) and that of course is
happening all day! This month we will read the story Have You Filled Your Bucket
Today? and learning about being Bucket Fillers and Bucket Dippers.
Numeracy
In Math we will be learning about the numbers 1 through 10. This may seem simple, but
it is very important that children have a strong sense of number in order to succeed with
more complicated math concepts. We will be working on counting forwards, backward,
starting in the middle, how to make each number (for example, 5 is 1 and 4 or 2 and 3 or
3 and 2, etc.), how to print the numeral and the number words, and how to recognize the
number quickly (this is called subitizing).

THE LOREM IPSUMS

WINTER 2016

Physical Skills and Well Being

In Gym class our focus will be gymnastics. I love this unit as do the kids. We will be
practicing landings, jumps, moving around the gym in different ways and using different
body parts, balances and rotations. In terms of well being we will review how to wash our
hands and cough and sneeze into our elbows in order to minimize the amount of cold
germs we pass along. Please remember to keep your child at home if he or she is sick with
the flu-lets try to stay as healthy as possible this winter!!
Citizenship and Humanity
Here is where we will continue to learn about others and ourselves. The next puzzle piece

What Else?
January Calendar Events:
Friday, Jan 23: School Day
Monday, Jan. 19: Parent Council Meeting (great way to get involved in the
school community) 6:30-8:00

And
-If you have any old white bed sheets or blankets laying around, can we please have them!
The kids want to make a snowfort in the classroom!

-With our interest in skating, I would like to take the kids on a skating fieldtrip. However, I
need everyone to have skates and I would need a lot of helpers. Can you please let me
know if your child has access to skates and a helmet and if you would be willing to come
along with us.
