IrecentlyhadtotryandsetafriendstraightwhenheclaimedHoldsworthwasboring
thisresurrectedmyinterestinhismusicandIbegantolistento16menofThainaftera

Actually,theyarentsodifferentinalotofrespects.
Itllbeatreattotryanduseyourscale,itreallyhasthatexotic,elegantsoundonacoustic
guitar.forsomereasonIdjustassumedHoldsworthdiddiminishedorwholetonescales
overtheDominants.anyattemptsImaketodoitmyself,wereatbest..kindofclever
sounding.butstilllikelytofrightensmallchildren(ourneighbourshaveadaycare!!).
doyouhaveanyobservationsonhowHoldworthandhisbandlearnhistunes?
NomatterhowhardItrytomakeitoutIcanneverheararecognizablepatterntothe
harmonicchanges.Howdotheyrememberallthat?
Inmyownexperienceitsalwaysfuntowriteoutachordchartwithconvulutedchord
changesandthenmakearecordingoutofthem.orIcanimprovisereasonablywell
overoldstandardchangesbutwhateverHoldsworthorChickcoreaplaysmakesme
feelexactlylikeNigelTufnel.

inrealityitcouldlikelybesomethingassimpleashavingchordchartstapedtothebackof

whateveritistheydotokeeptrackofhowthesongsgotogetherreallyis

IthinkyourerightaboutfeelandformasIwaslisteningtothemusic,Iwentfrommy
initialimpressionthatalotseemedtobethesame(ieetherealvolumeswelledchords)to
therealizationofjusthowstrikinglydifferentthecharacterofeachsongwais.

thing,Howdoyoumemorizeallthesehardcharts?ofBenMondersbassplayer.He
toldmeitshardwork,butwhenyouthinkaboutititsnothingcomparedtowhata
classicalviolinistorpianistmustmemorizewhenplayingaconcertoorlongsolowork,
taketheBachChaconneforinstancewithclassicalguitarists.
SoIthinkitsacombinationofhearingthechangesandrhythmvariations,hardworkin
thepracticeroom,abitofmusclememoryandyearsofexperience.
Also,forme,memorizingalotoftunesreallyhelps.Afteryearsofmemorizinghundreds

ImthinkingthoughthatHoldsworthisnotneccessarilythebestinfluencetodrawfrom
whentacklingtheseconcepts.
Theresatleasttwogoodreasonsoneismusicalandtheotheristechnical(although
itssallthesameoncethesmokeclears.
Musicallysomethinglikethebebopscaleisreallyonlyadominant7arpeggiowithsome
chromaticismthrownin.Chopinforexamplemightbeasgoodifnotbetterdirectionto
takethescale.CharleyParkerofcourse..andmyfavourite_Django.
Holdsworthisrightuptherewiththeseguysasaconceptofhowtobeststringchromatic
notestogetherforaniceeffectbuttoassociatethescaleprimarilywithHoldsworthisnot
justlimitingitsalsoadangerousdirectionforboththelistenersandtheplayers.
TheshortandsweetreasonwhyisthattheHoldsworthlegatotechniqueisperfectly
uselessforeveryguitaristbuthim.

Thinkartifialharmonicsortwohandedtappingorthosecoolchirpsyougetwhenyou
squeezeastringwiththeplectrum.
HoldsworthstechniqueowesanawfullottothelighteningfastsoundsoftheSpanish
Flamencoplayers.
Butagain,itsatrick.Forthedurationofapassage,theplayertranfersalltheworktothe
lefthand.Therighthandisstillworking,butitsnolongerneccessaryforproducingthe
actualmusicthelefthandtemporarilyassumesalltheresponsibilityforproducingmusic.
