3. Offer another example in support of author’s claim
Note: It would be helpful if the examples were different in some way the

second example might be an observation about society in general.
4. Entertain the most significant counter argument or make qualification
Counter arguments require you to say why the counter argument is
inaccurate, misleading, based on a misunderstanding, etc.
Qualifications, on the other hand, are a way for you to limit the application
of your own (and the author's) claim. For example: “Of course, (whatever
1am claiming) is not always the case...” “Of course, there are exceptions
to (whatever you are claiming).
5. Conclude

Position Task
Summary of arguments that erase the dividing line between the author and the
alternative:
Hand-in-hand Argument:
This is a powerful, clever argument, and the most intellectual of those we have covered. It
challenges the whole way of thinking (the premise) implied or assumed by the prompt.
The jist of the argument is that the author’s claim assumes a choice between his approach
(method, goal) and the altemative. You claim, in contrast, that the author's approach and
the alternative tend to follow one another. If you have one, you will have the other.
Means/End Argument
This is a more specific version of the hand-in-hand argument. It also challenges the
premise (the assumption) implied by the prompt.
Prerequisite Argument
This is a modified version of the means/end argument.
“I reject this claim because it suggests/implies/assumes that one must choose to
emphasize one or the other of these goals. In this way, the claim fails to account for the
connection between X (the author) and Y (the alternative).
1 argue instead that X is a prerequisite for accomplishing Y.
Argument of Cycles
According to this argument, the author's claim is not appropriate because (again) it
implies a choice between X and Y. The author’s claim does not accommodate the relation
‘between X and Y,
‘argue that X and Y are part of a continuous cycle and should not be thought of as
. tives,Argument of Phases:
‘This is similar to the prerequisite argument. It could be thought of as an argument based
‘on the concept of development.
It consists of rejecting the premise or assumption of the claim because the claim proposes
an inaccurate formulation of the relation between the terms of the prompt.
‘It argues instead that the two terms are not opposed but connected; further, that their
relation is one in which one phase leads to the next,
Argument of Levels
reject this claim because it does not take into account the complementary nature of the
relation between X and Y.
argue instead that X and Y are more accurately understood in terms of existing on a
series of levels. If X is more important at one level of organization, Y is likely to be more
important on the next level up or down.Writing Skills Assessment 2013
