Director of Training
Brandon Academy

Spring 2014

Overview and Purpose

This job task analysis was conducted for Brandon Academy for the position of a
possible Director of Training. Brandon Academy is a private school located in
Brandon, Florida servicing students in grades pre-k through eight. There currently is
not an official Director of Training, rather a group of administration who collectively
work together to asses, plan, and implement the training needs of the school. For
the purpose of this job task analysis I interviewed a member of the administrative
team, to be able to define and classify the various duties and tasks a Director of
Training should have. The interview was conducted through a series of online
communications. This job task analysis also serves the purpose to determine if the
official position of Director of Training should be created as a job separate from
those already served by the administrative team.
Background
Brandon Academy is a private school located in Brandon, Florida with a teaching
staff of 19, an administration of 5 (with some personal serving as both teaching and
administration), and one teaching aid. The school is accredited by the Florida
Council of Independent Schools and is a National Blue Ribbon School. Since the
founding of the school, training needs have been met by the administrative staff
and various outside professional development opportunities. The administration is
supportive of ongoing training if it has been found from an outside resource. For the
most part training needs have not been a problem for staff and teachers and it has
been found that most training needs are addressed accordingly.
Data Collection
On March 19, 2013 I conducted an on-line interview of one of the members of the
administrative staff. This collection method was determined due to time allowance
and prior commitments made. The individual interviewed has been with the school
for 10+ years and is a key decision maker in the school. I began by thanking her for
her time and explaining the purpose of my task. I then asked how the school
currently meets its training needs and proceeded to ask about the job
responsibilities of those who are in charge of training at the school. The interviewee
expressed surprise at the question of who is responsible for meeting training needs,
as she views it as a group effort among administrators and team leaders within
the school, with each member in charge of his own area of expertise. She also
expressed how it would be difficult for to imagine only one person presiding over all
training within the school as it is impossible for one person to be an expert in all
areas. She would rather use each individuals strengths within the school to support
training efforts.

Results
After reviewing the results of my interview, I was able to conclude that the job of
Director of Training is actually employed by several staff members at the school.
Assessment of need is determined by the two principals and the head of schools by
looking at the schools objectives and gaps in learning. Planning of instruction
(writing objectives, evaluating resources, access learner attributes, writing material,
and assessment of trainings) is completed by the lower school principal and one of
the two heads of school, while delivery of instruction is implemented by a
combination of heads of school and both middle and lower school principals through
the use of faculty meetings. Some training is carried out through small groups and
for these the trainings are implemented by team leaders as needed. It was also
noted that each member of administration was responsible for being aware of what
new technologies and practices were available. While the various jobs that the
multiple team members conduct are all overseen by the heads of school, it would
be beneficial to have one person who is responsible for all training needs as to
maintain constancy within the organization. It was stated that the reasoning for
maintaining the current structure was that the school would rather have subject
experts responsible for training in each area, it is my opinion that creating a part
time position to serves this job function would be beneficial. A sample job
description for what this would look like is below.
