Interior and Exterior Angles

Pick up pink notes paper

Pick a new group! This is a trial. If there are issues with
incomplete work or talking while I need you to be quiet, I will
change your seats!
Objectives
To find the sum of interior angles of a polygon
To find the sum of exterior angles of a polygon

Warm-up
Use the given shapes on your paper:
Quadrilateral (4-sides) Heptagon (7-sides)
Pentagon (5-sides) Octagon (8-sides)
Hexagon (6-sides)
Draw as many diagonals as you can from
(Diagonals connect any two vertices)

one vertex.

Answer the following question:

What is the relationship between the number of sides and
the number of triangles formed by the diagonals from one
vertex.

4 sides, 2 triangles

5 sides, 3 triangles

6 sides, 4 triangles

The number of triangles

formed is equal to the
number of sides of the
polygon minus 2.
What is the sum of the
angles of a triangle?

7 sides, 5 triangles

8 sides, 6 triangles

How can this be used to

determine the total angle
measure in any polygon?

Polygon Angle-Sum Theorem

The sum of the measures of the interior angles of
an n-gon is (n 2)180
Example: What is the sum of the angles of a nonagon?
Nonagon: n = 9
(9 2)180 = 1,260

Key definitions:
An equilateral polygon is a polygon with all
congruent sides.
An equiangular polygon is a polygon with all
congruent angles.
A regular polygon is a polygon that is both
equilateral and equiangular.

Why is the word regular important?

By knowing the polygon is
regular, you can use it to
solve problems about angles.

1st find the total of the angles: (6 2)180 = 720

2nd divide the total by the number of angles: 720 6 = 120

Example: find the missing angle

1st Find the sum of the angles.
(5 2)180 = 540
x

2nd Determine if regular or not?

No.
Why should I check? It may be as easy as dividing by the
number of sides to determine the answer.

3rd Find the sum of the given angles and subtract from total.
90 + 110 + 120 + 150 + x = 540
470 + x = 540
x = 70
The missing angle is 70 degrees.

Polygon Exterior Angle-Sum Theorem

The sum of the measures of the exterior angles of
a polygon, one at each vertex is 360.

Example: What is the measure of angle 1 in the regular octagon?

The total measure of the angles is 360
Since its regular, all the angles are equal!
360 8 = 45

Practice
On the back of the pink is some practice
problems. Complete those now!

Exit Slip Half Sheet of Paper

Find the total measure of the angles of a regular
16-gon, one interior angle, and one exterior angle.
Each interior angle of a regular polygon equals
175.2 degrees. How many sides does it have?
The measure of one exterior angle of a regular
polygon is 3 degrees. How many sides does it
have?
