Improving Maternal Health Care

Maternal health care is the health care of women during pregnancy, labor, and the
postpartum period. Women die due to the causes related to childbirth and pregnancy
that are preventable due to the lack adequate health care and complications, during and
before the birth, especially in developing countries in different parts of the world. The
causes of these complications are hemorrhage (rapid or uncontrollable blood loss),
infections, obstructed labor, hypertensive diseases, unsafe abortions, etc.
The UN has been doing their best to address these issues in many countries; for
example, in Bangladesh, midwives* are going to schools, provided by the UNFPA
(United Nations Population Fund) and spending months in classrooms followed by
practical training. In India, the UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Fund)
and its partners are to give cash transfers to pregnant women so they can give birth in
health facilities. SMS* is being introduced in Rwanda to help community health works
track pregnancies, report on danger signs during pregnancies, and subscribe to
emergency alerts.
So far, Bulgaria has proposed a Health Act, it encompasses prophylaxis*, the
prevention of unsafe abortions, high quality health care before, during, after the
pregnancy, prophylaxis of inborn abnormalities of the fetus, reducing complications
during pregnancy and labor, access to training programs, and consultations of the
issues of pregnancy, maternity, and family planning. Apart from the Health Act, there are
detailed regulations of medical check-ups of children between the ages 0 to 18 and
voluntary check-ups. Pregnant women, mothers, and children are entitled special
protection under the state. In 2003, Bulgaria adopted the Health Insurance Act, in which
the state defrays* the health insurance of children between 0 to 18 years. The Assisted
Reproduction Fund was established in 2008, it provides free treatment of sterility for
approximately 4000 women each year.
By having the Health Act, we can then focus on the providing voluntary safe abortions,
healthy sanitary, health institute, fully trained nurses and doctors with hands-on training
and high education, SMS messaging system with instant response time, health
insurance from children 18 and under, and frequent check-ups to ensure the childrens
health.
*midwives are people, who help the mother take care of the children.
*SMS (Short Message Service) are short text messages.
*Prophylaxis is prevention of something.
*Defrays is something provided or paid for.
