Scientific Name: Angiopteris palmiformis (Cav.) C. Chr.

Etymology: The name is derived from the Greek word aggeion, a vessel and pteris, a fern.
Common Name: Salaguisog or Pakong kalabaw (Tagalog), Giant fern (English)
Description: Angiopteris palmiformis (Cav.) C. Chr. is a terrestrial fern. Rhizomes erect, to 1 m
high.Fronds spirally arranged, large up to 2 m long. Stipes pale brown; scales entire, narrow.
Blades bipinnate; pinnae to 1 m long, scaly as stipes; pinnules 20 x 1-2 cm , papyraceous,
margins crenulate and inrolled when dry. Veins free; false veins distinct. Sori submarginal, up to
2 mm apart from pinnule margin, often in lateral contact, transversely dehiscing.
Distribution: Japan, Taiwan, Tahiti, throughout the Philippines.
Economic Importance: Species of Angiopteris are used in the Pacific to perfume coconut oil,
and in India the starch from the rhizome is eaten and used to brew an intoxicating drink
(Mabberley 1997). Angiopteris evecta is documented as naturalised in Hawaii, Jamaica and
Costa Rica (Christenhusz & Toivonen, 2008).
