Glow Stick Science Project

Members- Aly Bain, Darby Grider, Liz Brown

Specific Project Goals

For this project, my group and I decided to create a science experiment to make a
homemade glow stick. The ingredients we will be using are Mountain Dew, baking soda, dish
soap, two red Star bursts, and Hydrogen Peroxide. From the data collected, we will be able to
determine if creating a homemade glow stick is actually possible.

Addressing Specific Project Goals

1. We are collecting specific data scientifically on our glow sticks.
2. The data will be analyzed by experimenting on our own. We are going to try and make a
homemade glow stick.
3. Making a glow stick is realistic.
4. For science if it is a chemical reaction, math we have to add up and measure the
ingredients.
5. The projects goals are appropriate, we are challenging ourselves to make and
experiment.
6. There are 3 people in our group. Members- Aly Bain, Liz Brown, Darby Grider.
7. The ingredients we will be using is Mountain Dew, baking soda, dish soap, two red Star
bursts, and Hydrogen Peroxide
8. Yes, we can easily go home and find the materials in the kitchen.
9. The costs of the ingredients will be around $20. For our tri-fold for our presentation and
those materials will be around $10.
10. We will be using bar graphs to compare which glow sticks are brighter from different
colored starbursts.
11. Safety will be a top priority in this project because we dont want to over measure an
ingredient and have a explosion happen.
12. We will most likely work at Lizs house because it is the easiest location.
13. It would be better if the 3 of us meet outside of school, our project could get messy.

English- W.S. 12 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey

complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the
effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.
Science- HS-PS1-2. Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a
simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in
the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.

Important Dates
Feb 4rd, 5th, 6th, 7th: On these days we will be preparing to do our project. We will also research
information about the science part of this project such as why things happen during this
experiment.

Feb 8th: We will gather all the data we have collected and perform the experiment. To do the
experiment we will all gather at one agreed location.
Feb 11th: We will evaluate all of our data and conclude the data as well that we have collected.
Feb 11th, 12th: We will work on our poster for the science fair to share our experiment and
findings.
