Mrs. Pinkard
2014-2015
I. Course Description Students will learn math concepts including the following:
Unit 1: Relationships Between Quantities
Unit 2: Linear and Exponential Relationships
Unit 3: Reasoning with Equations
Unit 4: Descriptive Statistics
Unit 5: Congruence, Proof, and Constructions
Unit 6: Connecting Algebra and Geometry Through Coordinates
The assigned textbook is Mathematics 1 by Walch, ISBN # 978-0-8251-7412-4
As the year progresses, content will be put on an online format.
II. Materials
In order to be prepared, Lined Paper, Pencil, and Colored Pen (for correcting work) should be
brought to class every day. Students may want to have a 2-inch 3-ring binder for keeping work
in. It is helpful to have a few sheets of graph paper in class and more graph paper at home. The
textbook provides many graph pages. A scientific calculator, such as the TI-30xa, or a graphing
calculator, such as the TI-84, is recommended. It will be used as needed in class. Cell phones
will not be allowed as a calculator. Yes, graphing calculators are expensive, so plan ahead for
birthday or Christmas if you do not have one. Perhaps it helps to think of it this way: one
dollar per day for each day of the school year. Plus, look for one that is allowed on the ACT
test!
III. Class Rules & Daily Behavior
1. Be Polite and Respectful
2. Follow Directions
3. Use Time Effectively
Other rules will be added if necessary. School rules will be upheld as well. An effective
classroom has an environment that is work oriented but relaxed and pleasant. Students will
work and learn much this year. They will feel important and successful. They are in good
hands.
V. Grading
Grades will be based on total points from assignments, notes, warm-ups, quizzes, and tests.
The following grading scale will be used when calculating the Final Grade:
A:
94-100%
A-:
90-93%
B+:
87-89%
B:
84-86%

Assignments will be given nearly each class period and due the next class period. You
can expect approximately 30 minutes of daily homework. Generally, students will correct their
own assignment (with a colored pen) as answers are read. They will be graded on effort, or
graded on number of correct problems. If students score less than 50% on an assignment, they
should fix the missed problems and then re-submit the assignment the next period, or it is
considered late. Late assignments earn between 50% to 90%, depending on how much time has
passed since the assignment was due. Late work will need to be corrected on the students time,
and must be shown to me, before I loan the answer key with which to correct it. A late pass
must be attached to any late work, including work submitted due to being absent.
Please plan on working on the assignment the same day it is assigned. Then you will
know if you need additional help. Students should seek help immediately if they do not know
how to do assigned problems. Especially because math builds on previous material. I will be
available to give help after school for thirty minutes each day.
Assignments should be done in pencil and corrected in pen and have adequate work
neatly shown for each problem. In other words, copy the problem, show your thinking work,
and circle your answer.
Warm-ups will be given daily as students enter the classroom. Called Bellwork, work
should be shown and answers recorded on a weekly sheet. Students will be expected to take a
turn leading the warm-up.
Quizzes will be given after every few sections and after students have had a chance to
practice the concepts. Quizzes are not usually announced. Notes will usually be allowed.
Calculators may or may not be allowed, but that will be announced.
Tests will be given after students have had a chance to practice the concepts. If a student
is absent the day of the test, he or she will be expected to take the test the first day back. If a
student is prepared to take the test and does not pass the test the first time, then he or she will be
allowed to retake the test a maximum of two times.
Test Retakes
If a student does not pass a test the first time, he or she will be required to do test corrections
and then retake the test. No points are given for doing test corrections. Test Corrections may
require working after school with me. The objective is to understand the material. Test
Corrections need to be done on a separate sheet of paper. For each missed test problem, you
will need to show detailed work with an explanation of how to correctly do the problem and
you will need to identify what was your mistake.
Retakes need to be completed within two weeks from the date of the original test. The new
score will be an average of your first test and the retake.
VI. Cheating
All work is to be a students own. Cheating on assignments, quizzes, or tests, or talking to
others during a test will result in a score of 0 which will be averaged with the students other
scores. This also the case for those that help others cheat.
VII. Cell Phones and other electronic devices should be left at home or in your locker. You
wouldnt want to be at a restaurant and want the waitress to take your order, but have the
waitress answer her phone and ignore you. The school policy is first, to warn students, second,
to hold the phone in class until the end of the class period, and third, to send the phone to the
office to be picked up at the end of the day after a parent is notified.
VIII. Contact Information
I am excited about the opportunity to teach Secondary Math 1! I have several years of
experience teaching math. 2014-2015 begins my second year at Rockwell. I want to see
students succeed and I will do all I can to help students. If you have any questions, please
contact me at lpinkard@rockwellhigh.net and I will respond.
IX. Attendance
Students are encouraged to be in class every day. Excessive absences often affect
understanding and can affect grades. In fact, the highest grade a student may earn is a C if
there are excessive absences.
