5. Artistic Statement (A. Powers,

NotWithABrush)
The ripple of a crisp edge cutting through the ice
is a sound and feeling that I hold most dear to my
heart. Turning and gliding across the ice on my
skates yields a sense of freedom and belonging.
Skating creates tracings on the ice that produce
patterns and designs; these designs become art,
each with their own unique meaning, shape and
curve.
Through painting, I have expanded these on ice
tracings and transformed their movement and
interpretation to a canvas. My painting is the
continuation of my artistic momentum taken off
the ice and transferred to the studio. Snapshots
of skating patterns I create, shift from ice to
canvas my blade glides through the paint as if I
were on the ice, making shapes and designs akin
to their on ice tracings. My painting is an
extension of my on ice artistry, an expansion of
my imagination and creativity from ice to canvas.
Figure skating is sport that equals athleticism
with artistry - this marriage of technique and
beauty is something that I attempt to capture in
my painting. As a Canadian, skating is part of my
cultural identity; this artistic sport has shaped my
career and character, and has grounded my roots
in this geographical area. Skating is the genesis
of my passion for art, creativity and country
using my skates to create pictures on a canvas
