Explain the meaning of the U.N. emblem? The olive branches are a symbol for
peace, and the world map represents all of the people and the countries of the world.

How many countries are members of the U.N. today? 192 countries.

How might you describe the U.N. General Assembly? What happens when
it convenes? It is where they make decisions on important questions, having to do with
peace and security. They also decide on admission of new members and budgets. The
final answer requires a two-thirds majority.

Does the General Assemblys vote matter? Why or why not? Yes, their vote
matters because they are able to change matters that have to deal with things all
around the world.

What is unique about the U.N.s headquarters? Four out of five of the
headquarters are located in New York City.

protect human rights.

One challenge is that all members must obey the Charter. The other challenge is that all
countries should try to assist the United Nations.

League of Nations was an international organization that was created after the First
World War in order to keep the peace and help resolve international disputes.

Identify at least two. Members of the nations defended other members from
aggression, which shows nations coming together to help each other. There was also
international cooperation in social affairs which also shows how different nations are
helping each other.
10. Why did the League of Nations fail? Identify at least two reasons. The
League of nations failed because they didn't have any support from big powers and
because they didn't have any military.
11. In what year was the U.N. created? 1944. What was happening at that time?
It was the end of World War II.
12. How many countries originally joined the U.N.? 51 countries.

13. Why might the League of Nations be considered the forerunner of the United
Nations? They were considered a forerunner because they were to preserve peace
and promote international cooperation.
14. What is the U.N.s Security Council, and what countries are involved in it?
The Security Council is responsible for making sure there is peace. The countries
involved are China, France, United Kingdom, USSR and the USA.
15. Why might the structure and operation of the Security Council be
problematic? In other words, what principle does it appear to violate? Identify
two issues. Countries have different values and moralities. They also have different
views of right and wrong so they could have disagreements.
16. Who is the newest U.N. member, and noteworthy nations are not members of
the U.N.? Why has U.N. membership grown? The newest member is South Sudan.
The Vatican and Taiwan are not members.
17. How is the U.N. funded? Countries contribute as much money as they can afford.

information about their purpose as well as details you find interesting or

The U.N. also has separate organizations that work to meet its goals. List
four different groups or goals these organizations work to help or promote (NOT
the names of the organizations). UNs children fund, International Criminal Tribunal
for the Former Yugoslavia, UN Development Program, and international Atomic Energy
Agency.

What is the title of the U.N.s leader, and who currently holds this
position? How is this position used to counterbalance the strength of some U.N.
members?
He is known as the Secretary General. The current leader is Ban Ki-Moon. Its usually
filled by a member of a smaller country that is neutral in policies.

What do you feel is the future of the U.N.? Does it have a place in todays
world? Why or why not? What can it do to improve its position? Write a 5-6
sentence paragraph explaining your views. I don't think the UN is important anymore
in today's society. I don't believe that our world today needs an organization like the UN.
I think it would be more difficult to have it because it would be harder to maintain world
peace. Countries do not get along and it would be much harder to make them. I think
that if there was a UN, that it would be a waste of peoples time and money.
