Summarize

-Expository text can present a great deal of

information. In order to keep track of
important ideas and to check understanding,
you summarize the author's key points by
briefly restating the main idea in your own
words. Notice details, examples, facts, and
explanations the author includes. Then look
for a connection among the details. Once you
have determined the main idea, organize it
logically and in your own words without adding
opinions.

Genre: Informational Text:

- Key characteristics of expository text:

usually takes form of facts and explanations

Greek Roots

- Many scientific words are formed using

Greek roots. Say that a root is the part of a
word that carries its basic meaning. A root
can combine with a prefix, suffix, or another
root to form a word. Knowing common Greek
roots can help students figure out the
meaning of unfamiliar words.

Workbook page 287. Also refer to The RWW
book p. 431 and the Word Study Center.

Structure: Sequence

-The way authors organize ideas is called text

structure. An effective text structure is logical and
helps readers understand the main ideas the author
wants to convey. Authors use sequence text
structure when showing ideas or events in the order
in which they occur. Time order sequence is useful in
presenting information about historical events or
about steps in a process. Look for key words: fist,
nect, finally
