A BREIF LOOK AT AUSTRALIA

History
Australia is a large country/continent located in the South Indian Ocean. It resides below
Indonesia and Asia. It is the worlds only country that encompasses an entire continent. It is
comprised of a large island
and several small surrounding
which is called Tasmania and
Australia covers about

2,968,000 square miles

when including the island of

Tasmania. The country

was founded by the English in

in the early 1600s and

was originally founded to be a prison colony. Thousands of prisoners were dropped off by the
English and left to fend for themselves. Many of these criminals started colonies and started
their lives anew. Over the next hundred years,
Australia experienced heavy amounts of
immigration. Many men and women from Europe
came to Australia to find a new life. In the early
19th century, Australia was officially recognized as
a sovereign state.

Economy
Australia is known officially as the Commonwealth of Australia. It is a constitutional
monarchy that derives much of its government system from its father country of Great Brittan.
Australia uses a parliamentary system with the Prime Minister as head of all major decisions
within the government. Australian uses the Australian Dollar or the AUD. Its exchange rate to
the United States Dollar is about 1 AUD to 0.83 USD. Australia trades many various goods and
services to many countries throughout the world. Some exports include oil, beef, wheat and
metals such as iron and gold. It should be known that even though Australia is a new country, it
is widely known as a booming economic country.

Demographics
Australia has a population of about 23.13 million people. It has a predominantly white
population with over 65% of its inhabitants being Caucasians from America or Europe. Most of
the people of Australia are between 15-67 years of age. The language primarily spoken in
Australia is English. However, due to heavy immigration many years ago, many men and
women also speak Italian, German, Greek, and other European languages. The vast majority of
the population lives along the coast where most of the major Australian cities are also located.
The most populous cities include Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane, all of which are
located on the coast.

Geographic
Australia is split up into six different states and territories. These states include Victoria,
New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and the island of Tasmania.
The territories include the mostly uninhabited Northern Territory and the small surrounding
island of Lord Howe, Norfolk, Christmas, and the Cocos, also known as Keeling, Islands. The
capital of Australia is Canberra and is located in the Australian Capital Territory which is
surrounded by the state of New South Wales. This similar to the way The United States capitol
of Washington D.C. is located in the District of Columbia. This was to insure that know territory
could hold more power by owning the capitol.

Vacation Spot
While Australia is a booming industrial country, it is also a very popular vacation spot for
Americans and Europeans. Men and women from all over the globe travel thousands of miles to
experience what Australia has to offer. Australias beautiful landscape, glorious ocean front, and
exotic wildlife are among one of the most sought after in the world. It is visited by hundreds of
thousands every year and is one of the biggest vacation spots in the world. To travel to Australia,
all you need is a passport and a plane ticket and all these wonderful things could be right in front
of you.

Culture
Australian people live a very simple care-free lifestyle. Australians are known for their
very informal, friendly behavior. All are welcome to the countrys diverse cities and beautiful
landscapes. Australians celebrate many of the holidays that Americans do such as Easter,
Christmas and most other Christian holidays and beliefs. While Christianity is the most
prominent religion in Australia, everyone is free to choose their own beliefs in this free country.
Business etiquette in Australia is also very important. Suits in dark or neutral colors with a
tasteful tie are essential. It is proper to greet an Australian with a firm handshake and good eye
contact. It should be noted that business in Australia is conducted very similar to the way that
business in the United States is.

Cuisine
Australian cuisine is a very exotic and adventurous one. Australian food has evolved
over centuries of influence from Europeans countries. Australians eat a lot of seafood including
shrimp, lobster, crab and oysters. They also enjoy many English meals such as fish and chips,
meat pies, hot dogs, and even kangaroo meat. One of the most popular and most inexpensive
foods that most Australians crave is vegemite. Vegemite is a variety of vegetables and wheat
extract grinded into a thick paste. It is common to find vegemite on sandwiches, crackers, toast,
and biscuits. Unfortunately, due to Australias popularity as a vacation spot, much of this food is
very expensive compared to other countries. However, the price seems well worth the food,
Australian cuisine is considered one of the most exotic and delicious in the world.

Summary
This report is just the tip of the iceberg of what to expect when visiting Australia.
From its humble beginnings as a prison colony in the 16th century to the economic powerhouse
that it is today, Australia has seen many years of prosperous improvement. It is ironic that
hundreds of years ago, British citizens had to be forced to move to Australia and now many
people wish they lived in this wonderful country. Whether its the food, the beach, or the exotic
wildlife, there is something for everybody. Its no wonder why so many people worldwide
choose The Commonwealth as their vacation spot every year. The only limit in Australia is how
far you are willing to go.

SUBJECT:

Recent meeting in Melbourne, Australia

We would like to announce, that our recent trip to Melbourne to introduce HOSA to Australia left
us feeling like success. The students seemed eager to begin their lives as future health
professionals, and the educators seemed eager to give them the foundation. It excites us to know
that another country is as propelled to have a higher understanding of medicine.
We would like to thank you for granting us the opportunity to be the ones of this trip. It was a
mind boggling experience that will have lasting effects on our lives, in a positive way. We would
love to do it again sometime if at all possible!
