WELCOME FROM CESCF

On behalf of the organizing partnersSCMA Alberta; CME; Government of Alberta;

TRTech & the Canada 3.0 Network; and JuneWarren-Nickles Energy Group (a Glacier
Media Co.), I would like to welcome you to the 16th annual Canadian Energy Supply
Chain Forum!
The 2014 Forum comes at a critical time for our industry, making this years gathering
likely one of the most important in the events history. Were seeing strong signals
that capital markets are getting nervous about investing in Canadas energy industry.
One of the top concerns is our productivity challenges and our high-cost of capital
construction. If we dont fix this competitive disadvantage, our industryand indeed
our Canadian economy, is at risk.
While many chalk up our high cost to simple jurisdictional issues outside our control
like higher wages or cold climate, we know the issues are more complex and that
many of them are indeed in our control. We know our productivity challenge has a
lot to do with our value chain system and the way we do business across our energy
and construction supply chains. We do not communicate and collaborate as well as
we should with our partners/suppliers. We dont structure or manage projects and
their relationships well. We dont innovate as rapidly as we could. We dont transfer
knowledge & lessons learned across projects well. Well be discussing these and many
other issues over the coming daysand more importantly, coming up with solutions
and a path to solutions!
Our Tuesday opening dinner Keynote Speaker will set the stage and discuss how earlier
this year, our friends at the COAA issued a challenge to become Twice as Safe and
Twice as Productive by 2020. That is a grand challenge; and theres lots of work to do.
But if we set our minds to it and all put our oars in the water, we will get there!
Our industry is still very young, in particular on the large-scale industrial construction
side. As such, weve not yet finished the job of building a sustainable, efficient, worldclass energy supply chain network that can cost-effectively meet the demands of our
global industry. Building that is our goal over the next 3 days. Our industry and our
economy depend on it, so I encourage you all to lean in and make it happen!
Sincerely,
IAN MACGILLIVRAY

WELCOME FROM SCMA

THE ASSOCIATION
With over 1800 members in Alberta and 8000 nationally, the Supply Chain Management
Association members work across all sectors of the economy, private and public. SCMA
is the principal source of supply chain training, education and professional development
in the country. Through its 10 Provincial and Territorial Institutes, SCMA grants the
Supply Chain Management Professional (SCMP) designation, the highest achievement
in the field and the industry standard of strategic supply chain leadership.
SCMA was formed in 2013 through the amalgamation of the Purchasing Management
Association of Canada and Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Canada. With a
combined history of more than 140 years, today the association embraces all aspects of
strategic supply chain management.
SCMAs professional accreditation program, which leads to its Supply Chain
Management Professional (SCMP) designation, has received global recognition from
the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM) as meeting
the highest standards in supply chain education.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS
On June 7th, 1989, the Province of Alberta formally recognized the Certified
Professional Purchaser designation and approved the formation and incorporation of
the Alberta Institute of the Purchasing Management Association of Canada.
The Alberta chapter of PMAC, started out as a small, volunteer lead organization with
approximately 600 members. From humble beginnings, the Alberta Institute grew
into a thriving organization with over 1800 members, a variety of educational and professional development programs, as well as dedicated staff who are focused on the
continued growth of the Institute.

MORE RELEVANT THAN EVER

CAPP recently announced that in 2014 oil and gas investment spending is expected to
exceed $65 billion, an indication that the spending in the energy sector is continuing to
be significant. In order to sustain an international competitive advantage, increase productivity and ROI of capital projects, we need to have an industry leading supply chain
for the Canadian energy industry.
Nationally, the supply chain management profession makes a significant contribution to
Canadas economy and is critical to the competitive advantage of all enterprises. Latest
research shows that SCMA members control more than $130 billion in annual spend.
SCMA Alberta is once again proud to be a major Partner in the CESCF, as it strongly
supports the Institutes mission:
To enhance Alberta economic prosperity
by driving and setting the standard
for Supply Chain Management excellence.

WELCOME FROM CME

Given the increasing global demand for energy, investments in Canadas resources are
anticipated to continue to grow. Canadian manufacturers have played an important role
in developing our energy potential. For instance, investments in Alberta oil sands was
just under $31 billion in 2010, and Canadian manufacturers supplied $6.0 billion worth
of value added-goods and services directly or indirectly to develop that resource.
Manufacturing, as Canadas largest business sector, is essential to our prosperity.
Canadian manufacturers directly employ 1.8 million, create 13% of GDP, export 63%
of total goods and services, and are responsible for more than half of all private sector
R&D. Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) has been the voice of industry for
more than 140 years. Our mission is to help ensure the invaluable contributions of
manufacturing to Canadas social and economic fabric are sustained and enhanced.
CMEs 2013 report Oil Sands Manufacturing: A Trillion Opportunities for Canadian
Manufacturers estimates that investment in Albertas oil sands averaged more than
$20 billion annually between 1997 and 2013, with very rapid growth since 2007. This
investment is expected to continue to accelerate over the next decade, rising from
$47 billion in 2012 to $60 billion in 2020.
There is unprecedented potential for the domestic manufacturing in oil sands
developments. The range of opportunities for Canadian manufacturers supplying oil
sands operations is projected at $179 billion to $353 billion between 2012 and 2030.
This would result in oil sands related manufacturing being equal to as much as 60% of
current annual Canadian industrial production.
There is no guarantee, though, that industrial benefits, including value-added
manufacturing, will be concentrated among Canadian firms. If Canada is to fully realize
the potential offered by this resource, we need to foster an attractive investment
climate and create world-class upstream and downstream value-added manufacturing
and technology supply chains.
Hundreds of billions of dollars are at stake for Canadas economy over the coming
decades. The critical question is: How will Canadas provinces, the federal government
and those in the private sector develop solutions to current supply chain issues, and
unlock the full value of our energy potential for the benefit of all Canadians? In the
near future, CME and our government partners will be releasing results of an evaluation
of specific challenges that prevent manufacturers from fully capitalizing on the largest
development project in Canadian history.

WELCOME FROM CANADA 3.0

We are pleased to host Canada 3.0 in Western Canada for the first time and excited
by the opportunity to partner with the Canadian Energy Supply Chain Forum to bring
together leaders in the energy and technology sectors.
The theme of Canada 3.0 this year is Building the technology supply chain for the
energy industry, and the potential benefits for both industries are enormous. Canadas
energy industry is the one of the driving forces of Canadas economy, but it also faces
many challenges, including the need to increase productivity, improve environmental
performance and ensure a productive future workforce. While technological solutions may be available, or quickly developed, Canadas technology companies dont
necessarily understand the complexities of the energy industry and how to effectively
provide solutions as part of the supply chain.
Over the next couple of days we look forward to highlighting examples of collaboration
between these two vital sectors to Canadas economy. This is your chance to examine
ways to increase collaboration and develop the personal relationships between industries necessary to create innovation.
We encourage you spend some time at the TELUS innovation pavilion to see some of
the technological solutions on display and to attend the Canada 3.0 panels and workshops, where we hope you will contribute your knowledge to the ongoing discussion.
Looking forward to meeting many of you and enjoying a productive couple of days
in Calgary.
Sincerely,
AVVEY PETERS
Managing Director, Canadian Digital Media Network
