Examples
My mentor teacher welcomed every
student each morning. When the students
came in the door she would be at the door
waiting for them and say good morning
to each and every student. She had a
reading guest that comes every
Wednesday that she welcomes and make
sure the students welcome every time the
reading guest comes.
The classroom is organized with different
areas to promote learning. There is a
library for silent reading and there is a rug
with a square for every student when the
teacher is doing a smart board lesson.
At each student table cluster there is a bin
with pencils, markers, glue sticks, pens etc.
Students also have bins in the back of the
classroom with notebooks in them (Picture
below).
There is an area right outside the
classroom where my teacher displays
student work. She changes the work that is
displayed frequently.
The student desks are in groups of 6. When
my mentor teacher is instructing she

promotes group learning. When the teacher

instructs the students to work
independently they understand what is
expected of them and will not talk to their
group members.
Respectful
Culture

Teacher-student interactions are

generally friendly, but may
reflect occasional
inconsistencies, favoritism, or
disregard for students cultures
Students exhibit respect for the
teacher and are generally polite
to each other
Teacher is sometimes receptive
to the interests and opinions of
students.

My mentor teacher was friendly to her

students. I never noticed favoritism. The
only inconsistency I noticed was when she
was reading a story to her students and an
unknown word came up (parlor) . She
described what the word meant to her
students but since it is very rare to see a
parlor it did not resonate with the students.
The students were respectful to my mentor
teacher. She had a strong classroom
management system where the students
knew if they were disrespectful they would
have to move their clip from the green light
to the yellow light. My mentor teacher
always tells the students that they are a
classroom family. Families treat each
other with respect.
During instruction the teacher would
always ask students for to present their
answers to the class. She would never just
ask one student. She would make sure to
ask multiple students.
