During her tenure, Deer Park CCSD #82 reached the top 10 percent for student achievement in the State of Illinois. Outside her career, Dr. Carolyn Koos supports charitable activities such as Run with Carl. Founded in 1995, Run with Carl takes place every year on Labor Day. The race was established in memory of Carl Schillig, a student at Pleasant Valley High School who was killed in a carpedestrian accident at age 15. Run with Carl has generated thousands of dollars in scholarship funds that have helped graduates of Pleasant Valley pursue their collegiate studies. In addition to raising funds for scholarships and honoring the memory of their son, the Schillig family hoped that Run with Carl would foster a love of running in participants. In 2014, after nearly 20 years of the annual event, the Schillig family announced that Run with Carl 2014 would be the final event. The family plans to honor their son's memory in other ways going forward.
