Lesson Topic _____Frogs________________

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES/ STUDENT OUTCOMES

1. Students will create a frog out of a brown paper bag, construction paper and other
various materials in order to make their frog their own. I.e. markers, crayons, colored
pencils, glitter, stickers.
2. Students will follow the instructions and techniques I give them in making their frog.
3. Students will demonstrate proper and safe use of art materials.
4. Students will answer questions relating to frogs previously discussed in our science
lesson as we are doing our art lesson.

WV CSOs
-

VA.0.2.1- Construct three dimensional objects using various media to communicate

ideas, experiences and stories
VA.S.VAI.1- Understand processes and techniques in creating art.
VA.O.SAI.1.4- Use materials and tools in a safe and responsible manner.
SC.S.2.1- Demonstrate the ability to think and act as scientists by engaging in active
inquiries and investigations, while incorporating hands-on activities.

National Standards

NA-VA.K-4.1 UNDERSTANDING AND APPLYING MEDIA, TECHNIQUES, AND

PROCESSES
Achievement Standard: Students know the differences between materials, techniques,
and processes
Students describe how different materials, techniques, and processes cause different
responses
Students use different media, techniques, and processes to communicate ideas,
experiences, and stories

Students use art materials and tools in a safe and responsible manner

Management Framework
Overall time: 50 minutes
10 minutes- Explaining the activity and the passing out of materials.
40 minutes- Actual activity

Strategies
-

Teacher explanation
Passing out of materials
Walking kids through the activity and doing one myself for example.

DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION/ ADAPTATIONS/ INTERVENTIONS

-

Since behavioral problems arise quite frequently in my classroom (especially during

fun activities such as art), I will make myself very clear that I need their undivided
attention and that they must follow all rules, safety and otherwise, for this project
and if not, they will be punished and will not be able to participate.
Students with hearing/visual problems will sit close to the front of the room to better
see whats going on.

Procedures
Introduction/lesson set
First, I will reintroduce basic facts about frogs and the life cycle of a frog, just to let the kids
know that what we are doing is related to everything else Ive been teaching. I will then tell
them what we are about to do and pull out a pre-made frog puppet to show them what
theirs will look like in the end and to also get them excited about making one.
Body and Transition
-

Pass out materials; see attachments.

Walk students through the cutting out of spots, eyes and tounge
Walk students through the gluing on of previously stated items.
Allow students time to put their own personal touches onto their frogs.

Closure

Review basic facts once again while they are finishing up.
Ask students to hold up their finished project as a class when they are done.

Assessment
-Diagnostic: I will assess prior knowledge from our previous science lesson by asking
some questions beforehand on frogs as a means of incorporating science back into the
art lesson and making sure that they retained that information.
- Formative: I will move among students as they create their puppet. (objectives 1 and
2)
-Summative: The students end product (their puppet) will be the summative
assessment for this lesson; I will be able to tell if students followed directions in the
making of their puppet.

Materials
-

25 brown paper bags

Various colors of construction paper
Scissors
Glue
Glitter
Stickers
Frog and Fly by Jeff Mack book

Extended Activities
If Students finish early: If students finish early, they will be given a frog word search to
complete.
If Lesson Finishes Early: If the lesson finishes early, I will read to the class Frog and Fly by
Jeff Mack.
If Technology Fails: No technology used in the teaching of this lesson.
