Weekly Newsletter

February 9-13
Homework
Homework should take no longer than 30 minutes. If your
child is taking more than 30 minutes please contact me.

Spelling
Monday- Cut and sort the spelling word cards. Write
word lists in ABC order.
Tuesday- Use the high frequency words in spelling
sentences. You need five second grade sentences.
Wednesday- Write a paragraph about Egypt. It should
be at least six sentences. Dont forget a topic sentence
and remember it should not be, Im going to tell you
about Think of a sentence that will get the readers
attention.
Thursday- Study for your spelling test.
Read for 20 minutes each night- This can be a child
reading to a parent, a parent reading to a child, or silent
reading.

Exciting News!
1) We will be having a Valentines Day party
on Friday. Students will be able to pass out Valentines
cards. Please do not pass cards out that have candy or
food attached as we have some allergies in the class. If
you would like to provide any snacks please provide
healthy foods or food that is packaged so ingredients can
be identified.
2) We will have an author visiting us on Friday. This
author will read a story and answer questions about her
books Kee Kees Adventures.

Other News
Students will be completing a cognitive assessment. This
assessment is to test how your child thinks. There is no
way to prepare for this test.

Math
This week in math we will be finishing our unit on
telling time to the nearest five minutes. We will be
concentrating on using terms such as quarter after,
quarter after, and half past, after/past, of/before.
Finally, we will end our unit with elapsed time to the
nearest hour and half hour. Students should be prepared
to see an end of unit assessment when we return from the
long weekend.

Spelling

Science/Social Studies
We are continuing our journey through Ancient Egypt.
Students have been learning about the landscape,
resources, climate, and people. The students have been
particularly interested in the process of making mummies.
During our read aloud and shared reading times students
have been listening to and learning about ancient
Egyptian myths. We have begun a readers theater that
allows for the students to be interactive in learning about
Ancient Egypt.
Vocabulary: Ancient Egypt, Nile River, Pharoah,
Sahara Desert, mummy(ies), papyrus, hieroglyphics*

Goups 1 and 2: ar, or, and er sounds


Ex: car, store, her, and oddball-stir
Group 3: or, ar and r sounds
Ex: bore/boar, scar, and earn

High Frequency words: leave, before, people, through/

Writing
We will begin writing stories on our adventures in
Ancient Egypt. The students will find a way they can
time travel into the past. The stories will include and
explain what the students see when they travel back in
time. They will use books that are provided in the
classroom and the information they have learned so far
about Ancient Egypt.
