Goals and Objectives For The Year:

This year we will work to build your young adults


reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
Throughout the year, students will be engaged in a
variety of reading and writing activities that will
strengthen their written communication and literary
comprehension.
Students will read texts from a variety of genres
and take part in activities that appeal to multiple
learning styles. We will also work to expand
vocabulary, practice grammar, and develop critical
thinking skills.

Objectives
Students will:
prepare to take the Common Core English

Regents this coming June.


develop writing and listening skills
utilizing a variety of literary genres
develop voice through literary discussion,
Socratic seminars and oral reading
enhance formal and creative writing skills
Improve upon analytical reading and textbased responses.

Grading Procedures
Quarterly grades are determined by the

following criteria:

Homework / Class work


15%
Tests / Essays/ Projects
50%
Quizzes / Journals
35%

Homework Grade
Along with collected and graded

homework assignments, students


begin with an overall homework
grade of 100%.
Any missed homework assignment

deducts 5 points from that grade.

Major Assignments
Lateness on assignments:

deduct 5 points per day

if the printer runs out of ink.


If family illness or emergency

occurs, please send a note in

Book Clubs / Literary


Students will be given a choice in different
selected novels.
Theory

Once we begin Book Clubs (2 nd quarter), you

should notice your child reading


independently everyday.
Every Friday Book Club groups will meet.
Students will have a response packet to
complete based on the specific Literary
Theory that they were asked to focus on for
that meeting.
Literary Theory: Reader Response criticism,
(authors)biographical criticism, historical
criticism, gender criticism, and Marxist
criticism

Attendance
The better the students

attendance, the better educational


experience that student will have.
If students are absent, they are

responsible to make up the work


that they missed and are
encouraged to come to extra help.

Extra Help

I encourage students to come to

extra help!
Extra Help takes place immediately

after school in room 200B on


Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
If unable to make after school

hours, students can make a 7:15


a.m. appointment or Period 3
appointment.

Classroom Protocol
All cell phones must be off and

out of sight.
If students have their cell phone
out, teachers are required to
take the phone and hand it to
one of the principals.
The parent or guardian is the
only one capable of retrieving
the cell phone back.
