Lesson: Past perfect continuous

Materials: Whiteboard, Markers, Past perfect continuous exercise sheets.

Objectives:
Intermediate level students are able to do the following:
1.Write sentence in the past perfect continuous form.
2. Placement of the past perfect continuous in the timeline.
3.Unscramble and form sentences based on the structure of
the grammar.
4. Talking about past events using the past perfect continuous.

Anticipated problems for Teacher:


1. T may find it difficult to teach the past perfect continuous because its
grammar structure is long and allows much confusion in terms of the Auxiliary
being conjugated in the past simple.
Solution: Teacher will go through the structure of the past perfect continuous in
a step by step manner to ensure that it is not being rushed. T will break the
structure into categories of subject, auxiliary, verb to help student grasp the
concept in an easier way.
Anticipated problems for Students:
1. Ss may find the past perfect continuous structure hard to remember since its
too long.
Solution: T will break down the structure into categories and present it in broken
bits for the Ss so that they can easily pick up on the order and structure of the
past perfect continuous.

Teacher Activity
T will write down the name of the topic: Past perfect continuous.
T will brain storm about what students may think the lesson may be about by judging the given title.
T will ask gist questions to elicit more from the students:
-1. What is the past about?
-2. What is the past perfect about?
-3.Conitnous is associated with which ending?

T will draw a timeline on the board and point to where the past perfect continuous belongs.

T will write down an example sentence on the board to help students with the idea.
I.e. I had been driving.
T will break down the sentence and associate all words in the sentence with a category of: Subject, Auxiliary: Had,

Auxiliary: Been, and a verb in its continuous form.

T will choose five Ss to give an example similar to the model example on the board.

T will instruct the Ss as the following:


T will ask Ss to form pairs and sit with their respective partners.
T will give Ss a sentence scramble exercise sheet and inform them that they have 12 minutes to complete 20 questions.

The worksheet will consist of a sentence in an incorrect order that will need to be put in the form of a past perfect
continuous sentence:
I.e. Walking, She, Been, Mall, In, Had
Correct answer: She had been walking in the mall.

At the end of the activity, each pair of Ss will come up and read out one answer per group.
T will present the concept by writing it on the white board.
T will explain the definition of past perfect continuous and show examples to create familiarity with the concept.
Past perfect continuous: We use it to express something which took place in the past but ended in the past as well.

Ss will be required to create a role play which will consist of asking each other questions about an event that took place in
the past. I.e. A party, a weekend, a vacation trip.
