PART B: Explanation of Decisions
Textile Arts and Design 7
OUTCOME

KNOWLEDGE/SKILL LEVEL

EXPLANATION

1.1 Demonstrate an understanding

of the relationship between
clothing choices and personal
expression.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I have experience doing this for

myself, and also I have witnessed
this done for other cultures. I have
travelled and seen this in many
other cultures.

1.2 Use an embellishment

technique to add personal
expression to a textile item.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I have used embellishment

techniques in relation to clothing in
my personal life, and also with
students and through volunteer
experiences. Ive embellished
things such as tie-dying, decorating
with fabric paints, iron-on
transfers, used fabric stencils, and
used fabric adhesives.

1.3 Identify the potential of sewing

and textile arts as a source of
future income.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I am familiar with jobs which focus

on the use of textile arts and
sewing skills to create an income. I
know several people personally
who do this, so they could become
a resource for me either for
questions, or as guest speakers in
my classroom.

2.1 Extend their knowledge of

textiles to make informed decisions
related to clothing selection and
care.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

This is something that I have

personally done for many years
when I select and purchase my own
clothing. I am also very skilled in
caring for clothing, as I have
practiced this with both my
personal clothing which requires
many different types of care, such
as dry-cleaning, steam cleaning,
handwash, air dry, etc. and also with
my restaurant uniforms over the
years.

2.2 Demonstrate an awareness of

fibre and fabric construction
techniques.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

I know a little bit about fabric

construction and I have seen a
loom in progress, but I think I
would need a bit more first hand
experience to be able to explain
this to students.

Textile Arts and Design 7

3.1 Develop skills in the use of
technology for sewing. Threading
and operating a sewing machine,
using an iron, using a serger.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

I am confident in some of the

skills, such as ironing and operating
and threading a sewing machine,
but I am not familiar with using a
serger yet.

3.2 Applying sewing skills to a

project and articulate what they
have learned using sewing
terminology.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

I feel confident in teaching students

to use proper sewing technology,
but I still have limited experience in
producing a textiles project
through a combination of sewing
skills. I think that I would feel more
confident in teaching this if I
completed several more projects
myself so that I could gain a bit
more confidence and skill in this
area.

OUTCOME

KNOWLEDGE/SKILL LEVEL

EXPLANATION

1.1 Describe factors affecting

clothing decisions.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I have experience doing this for

myself, and also I have witnessed
this done for other cultures. I have
travelled and seen this in many
other cultures.

1.2 Analyze factors to consider

when deciding to buy or sew
textile items.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I am conscious of budgeting and

cost factors, so I think that I could
easily teach this outcome through a
cost analysis or through comparing
budgets with students.

1.3 Explain the textile care process

using the information provided on
care labels.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I have been caring for my own

clothing for many years and I feel
confident in my ability to do so. I
have a variety of different types of
clothing so I have experience in
reading different labels and caring
for my clothes in a variety of
different ways. Ex. handwash, dry
clean, tumble dry, hang dry, etc.

1.4 Expand their wardrobe by

repairing, redesigning, and or
recycling garments.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

I do not have a lot of experience

with repairing clothing, as this is
not something I typically do often
for myself. I am able to hand sew
buttons or repair small holes, but I
dont have any experience with
hemming or altering clothing.

Textile Production 10
2.1 Trace the evolution of textile
technology.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

I am familiar with some of the basic

facts of textile technology
evolution, but before teaching this I
would definitely need to review the
history and look at some pictures
to effectively cover this outcome.

2.2 Describe how fabrics are

generated.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

I know a little bit about fabric

construction and I have seen a
loom in progress, but I think I
would need a bit more first hand
experience to be able to explain
this to students.

2.3 Develop pattern literacy in

preparation for project
construction.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

I have experience working with

very basic patterns and I
understand how read and apply
them to the project, but I lack
experience working with more
complex patterns, so before
teaching this outcome, I would like
to work with a pattern that
requires a bit more time and skill
to carry-out.

2.4 Demonstrate the safe use of

appropriate technology for
completing a textile project.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I have experience working safely in

the FST lab as a student, and I have
also taught Foods Labs and Science
Labs which also rely heavily on
safety and many of those rules
translate over to the Textiles Lab,
so I feel confident running a safe
lab.

3.1 Identify and define the elements

of design as applied to textiles.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

Im not entirely sure what this

outcome is suggesting, so I think I
would need to work more on the
understanding of elements of
design before trying to teach this.

3.2 Describe the relationship of the

colours in the colour wheel using
basic colour terminology.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I have taken art classes in the past,

so I feel comfortable working with
the colour wheel and its elements.
I think that I could easily relate this
to textiles.

3.3 Describe the relationship

between colours and personality,
moods and feelings.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

Once again, I have taken art

classes, and I have experienced this
as a student. The same principles
could easily be applied from art
classes to textile classes.

Textile Production 10
3.4 Describe the use of the
elements of design in a textile
project of their own creation.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I feel confident in teaching students

the process of design and I think I
could show them how to choose
and carryout a project from start
to finish using elements of design. I
have experience in this from our
FST classes, but also the same basic
principle is applied through
teaching other courses such as FST
and Science.

4.1 Describe and identify

characteristics of careers in the
textile industry, apparel production
and in fashion merchandising.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I am familiar with jobs which focus

on the use of textile arts and
sewing skills to create an income. I
know several people personally
who do this, so they could become
a resource for me either for
questions, or as guest speakers in
my classroom.

Textile Technology 12
OUTCOME

KNOWLEDGE/SKILL LEVEL

EXPLANATION

1.1 Describe the sources of specific

natural, synthetic and manufactured
fibers.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

Im familiar with this from our

work on it in previous FST classes,
but I would need to review it
before teaching it to students.

1.2 Demonstrate an understanding

of the properties and performance
of fibers, yarns, and fabrics.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

Again, Im familiar with this from

our work on it in previous FST
classes, but I would need to review
it before teaching it to students.

1.3 Research and explore evolution

of fibers to fabrics.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

Also, Im familiar with this from our

work on it in previous FST classes,
but I would need to review it
before teaching it to students.

2.1 Define and investigate the

elements and principles used in the
design of textile works.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

I know the elements and principles

that go into basic textile projects
but I think that I would need to
investigate a bit further into more
complicated projects to observe
this process before teaching it to
students.

2.2 Create a textile aesthetic and

reflect on the relevant elements
and principles of design.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

Again, I am confident in this for a

basic project, but my experience is
limited when it comes to more
complicated projects.

Textile Technology 12
3.1 Identify and describe effective
use of textile tools and equipment.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I am familiar and confident with the

majority of tools and equipment in
the textiles classroom and I feel
that I could teach this to students
from my experience with sewing.

3.2 Demonstrate safe use of tools

and equipment and appropriate
conduct in the textile laboratory
environment.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I have experience working safely in

the FST lab as a student, and I have
also taught Foods Labs and Science
Labs which also rely heavily on
safety and many of those rules
translate over to the Textiles Lab,
so I feel confident running a safe
lab.

3.3 Practice suitable care and

maintenance of textile tools and
equipment.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

This ties in with safety, which I feel

confident in. Taking care of
equipment is a vital part of creating
a safe lab environment, therefore I
believe I could do this.

3.4 Explain factors affecting

consumer decisions when
purchasing textile tools and
equipment.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I could compare and contrast

various types of equipment as well
as analyze prices with students
confidently based on experience of
doing this in my daily life.

4.1 Effectively use language

associated with textile production.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

I know the majority of the language

for basic skills and projects, but I
would definitely review before
teaching this to students to ensure
I had the correct terminology.

4.2 Compare and contrast

standards of quality in textile
production.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

Could definitely provide visual

examples for students to observe
this, and would feel confident
running a discussion about what
defines quality in reference to
textiles.

4.3 Demonstrate skills and

techniques used in textile design
and/or drafting.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

Again, I have a basic knowledge of

this, but experience is limited from
previously only producing basic
projects. I need to complete some
more complex projects in order to
teach this at the grade 12 level.

4.4 Demonstrate informed

preparation skills for textile
production.

Confident in skill/knowledge/
experience to teach in a classroom
setting.

I understand the preparation steps

it takes to complete a textiles
project at any level from
completing my own, so I feel that I
could teach this to students
through creating checklists, notes,
and other step-by-step processes.

Textile Technology 12
4.5 Identify and select suitable
notions and materials for use in
textile production.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

I am familiar with basic selections,

but when it comes to selecting less
common fabrics, I am not sure
about how to select appropriate
thread, needles, etc to match this.

4.6 Explore and effectively use

textile production and
embellishment techniques.

Some knowledge/skill/experience
that will give a good start, but
require more to be confident to
teach in a textiles classroom.

I am confident in most
embellishment techniques, and I am
confident in basic textile
productions, but I need a more
broad project knowledge and
experience in order to feel
confident teaching this at the grade
12 level. I need more experience in
more complicated projects.

PART C: Specific Competencies Needed

1. Working with a serger. I have never used a serger before and I have no idea how to operate
it, the care for the machine, or the terminology associated with the process.
2. Working with a pattern with a higher degree of difficulty. As I mentioned above, I only have
basic experience in relation to working with a pattern and in order to teach students how
to do this, particularly at the grade 12 level, I would like to trying working with a pattern
with a higher degree of difficulty so that I feel more confident in my experiences and
abilities.
3. Repairing clothing. I really lack experience in this area, as the only time Ive ever done this
was to hand sew a button or fix a tiny hole. I would definitely want to work on repairing or
altering clothing before teaching this to students.
4. How to select threads and needles to match specific fabrics. I have really only worked with
a limited type of fabric and have only used standard needles or thread. I would like to be
able to learn how to select what is appropriate based on different fabrics or machine
settings for more complicated projects.
5. As an addition to my knowledge of embellishment techniques, I would like to learn how to
embroider because I think this could be beneficial in the classroom, it would be convenient
to be able to teach students how to embroider their name on their project for identification
and also grading processes.
