1. Explain the meaning of the U.N. emblem.


Olive branches symbolize peace. The world map depicts the area of concern to the United
Nations in achieving its main purpose, peace and security.
2. How many countries are members of the U.N. today? ______________
There are 193 United Nations member states, and each of them is a member of the United
Nations General Assembly.
3. How might you describe the U.N. General Assembly? What happens when it convenes?
The 69th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 69) will convene at UN Headquarters on
Tuesday, 16 September 2014. The General Debate will open on Wednesday, 24 September 2014.
The debate's opening was postponed from Tuesday, 23 September 2014, to accommodate the

Yes because of it is not vetoed by the 5 special nations then it goes in to law.
5. What is unique about the U.N.s headquarters?
Although it is situated in New York City, the land occupied by the United Nations Headquarters
and the spaces of buildings that it rents are under the sole administration of the United
Nations. They are technically extraterritorial through a treaty agreement with the U.S.
government. However, in exchange for local police, fire protection and other services, the
United Nations agrees to acknowledge most local, state, and federal laws.
6. What are the main goals of the U.N.?
The UN Charter sets out four main purposes: Maintaining worldwide peace and security.
Developing relations among nations. Fostering cooperation between nations in order to solve
economic, social, cultural or humanitarian international problems

8. What was the League of Nations, and how does it relate to the U.N.?
The forerunner of the United Nations was the League of Nations and the League of Nations
stopped its actions after it failed to prevent WWII.
9. In what ways was the League of Nations an example of early globalization? Identify at least
two.
Originally it was composed largely of the Allies of World War II, mainly European
countries, Commonwealth countries, and nations of the Americas. It was conceived as
an organization of "peace-loving" nations, who were combining to prevent future
aggression and for other humanitarian purposes.

10.Why did the League of Nations fail? Identify at least two reasons.
The first crisis the League had to face was in north Italy In 1919, Italian nationalists, angered
that the "Big Three" had, in their opinion, broken promises to Italy at the Treaty of Versailles,
captured the small port of Fiume.

17.How is the U.N. funded?
The UN is financed from assessed and voluntary contributions from member states. The
General Assembly approves the regular budget and determines the assessment for each
member. This is broadly based on the relative capacity of each country to pay, as measured
by its gross national income, with adjustments for external debt and low per capita income.
The two-year budget for 201213 was $5.512 billion in total.
