Title: Informative Speech Outline

Date: Fall 2011

Artifact Description:
This artifact is an outline of a speech I did in the fall of 2011 while I was a sophomore at the
University of Wisconsin Fox Valley. I presented this speech to my communications class of
approximately 25 students. The speech was about a mental disorder called multiple personality.
This disorder is characterized by having at least two distinct personalities that control the body.
Multiple personality disorder is developed to cope with traumatic events that the individual
typically experiences as a child. This was a speech to inform my classmates about a topic that I
had done extensive research on. I created the outline using a word processing program called
Microsoft Word 2008. While I presented my speech, I had a PowerPoint presentation with slides
that helped give a visual of what I was talking about.
ALIGNMENT
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment
I believe this artifact best aligns with standard six of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and
Licensure Standards which states: The teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal,
and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive
interaction in the classroom. This artifact best aligns with standard six because I demonstrated
understanding in using effective nonverbal communication. During the speech I asked my
classmates to close their eyes and imagine themselves as their favorite person. I then asked
them to pretend that they werent just one person but several. Finally, I asked them to pretend
that they had no control over who they were being. I gave them a few moments of silence to try
and fathom the overwhelming feeling of having no control. I also demonstrated the importance
of verbal communication in this speech because I used clear words that were not too advanced
or basic for their understanding. The concept of multiple personality is difficult to try to explain
so verbal word choice was crucial in making sure my classmates understood the idea. Finally, I
had slides with a brief explanation of what I was talking about behind me. This shows that I am
not only able to use media as a communication tool but also use technology to create the slides.
UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement
Alignment:
I believe this artifact best aligns with KSD1.d. of UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge,
Skill, Disposition Statements which states: The candidate actively seeks materials and resources
to enhance instruction by utilizing school and district resources as well as other resources
available outside the school/district. This artifact best aligns with this standard because during
my speech I made references to professional doctors who study multiple personality disorder.
Making these references enhances my validity on the subject, it also shows my ability to use
other resources while I present information.
Secondary Alignment:
KS3.a: Communicates clearly and accurately
KSD3.e: Demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness
REFLECTION
What I learned about teaching/learning:
I learned that communication is an important skill that teachers need to have. Both verbal and
nonverbal communication is crucial in making sure that the students are getting the proper
information. I learned that in a world where technology is quickly growing, teachers have to be
able to use the current technology to better the learning environment for the children. Standard
six assures that teachers communicate well. It is not only important for teachers to be able to
communicate well with the students but with adults such as parents and other teaching staff.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator:

I learned that I have to be able to use verbal and nonverbal communication well in my teaching
in order for my students to acquire as much knowledge as possible. Technology is a big part in
helping students learn, it gives them a visual aid to help those who learn better by seeing. Being
able to use computer programs such as PowerPoint to enhance my lessons will help the students
understand the content. I learned that I have to not only communicate well to the students but to
the parents and other staff I work with.
