I.

Purpose

Students will be introduced as a whole group to ending sounds. We will also


practice summarizing a text and using fix-up monitoring.

Oral Language SOL K.4- The student will identify, say, segment, and blend
various units of speech sounds.
e) Identify words according to shared beginning and/or ending sounds.

Reading SOL K.7- The student will develop an understanding of basic phonetic
principles.
a) Identify and name the uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

Reading SOL K.10- The student will demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction


texts.
a) Use pictures to identify topic and make predictions.
b) Identify text features specific to the topic, such as titles, headings, and
pictures.

II.

Objective

The student will be able to match words with the same ending sounds given
various games during centers with 60% accuracy.
Key Vocabulary: Summarize, Ending Sound, Webbed Feet

Procedure
a. Introduction/Snapshot

Visual phonics
Elkoin boxes to point out ending sounds

b. Development/Learning Activities

Read the nonfiction big book, Animals in Their Habitats. Model and practice fixup monitoring.
Center 1: Listening Center (focusing on phonemic awareness and beginning
sounds. Ending Sound Instant Learning Center. Ending Sounds Match-Ups.
Center 2: Building words game.
Center 3: Computer program Starfall working on phonemic awareness skills.
Phonics box ending sounds. Magnetic sound sorting board.
Word Study Groups: As students are working on Centers, I will pull students for
Word Study groups. Groups are: struggling, emerging, On-Track (group 1), and
On-Track (group 2). Struggling and emerging will be pulled everyday while
group 1 and 2 will be pulled every other day.
Struggling group: Letters and letter formation. Model and practice summarizing
Animals in Their Habitats.
Emerging: Model and practice summarizing Animals in Their Habitats.
On-Track (group 1): Model and practice summarizing Animals in Their Habitats.
Practice word sort focusing on ending sounds.

How will you assess the students knowledge of the new skills taught?
I will monitor centers and make sure students are matching the correct ending
sounds. I will make sure students are saying the words out loud at each center.
Adaptations/Remediation (for students with learning challenges)

Model how to find the ending sound. Have elkoin boxes for students to see the
word. Have students say the word out loud.
Extensions (For advanced/gifted students)

If students easily find the ending sound, have them identify the beginning sound.
Ask them to write the word down.
