Commas Separate
Independent Clauses Joined by
a Conjunction
When you see a conjunction (for, and, nor,
but,or,yet, so) joining independent clauses, a
comma should precede the conjunction. In the
past, this was referred to as FANBOYS.
Emily wanted to sit outside, butit was raining.
Henry could tie the shoe himself, orhe could
ask Suze to tie his shoe.
Notice that the independent clauses are
essentially complete sentences on each side of
the conjunction.
The comma follows all but the last item in the series.
When using a conjunction, such as and or or, at the
end of the series, remember to precede it with a comma
