What is HTML?

HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is a type of computer language use to make

webpages. Bellis (2012) says it all started when Vannevar Bush proposed the basics of hypertext
in 1945, it let Tim Berners-Lee and others to invent the World Wide Web, HTML, HyperText
Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and Universal Resource Locators (URL) in 1990. Bellis (2012) also
states Tim Berners-Lee was the primary author of html, helped by his colleagues at CERN, an
international scientific organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. He is the Director of the
World Wide Web Consortium, the group that sets technical standards for the Web.
HTML works by consisting of a series of short codes typed into a text-file, these are the
tags. The text is saved as a HTML file, and viewed through a browser. This browser reads the file
and translates the text into a visible form. Shannon (2010).
Waterman (2012) says code is usually letters, numbers, words, and symbols. The inside
of the angle brackets shows what the element is and the attributes it should have (size, font, etc.)
To end the formatting, the user types the first angle bracket, then a backslash, then repeats the
element code and closes the bracket. Which would look like: <title><strong>What Is HTML?
</strong></title>.
There are many types of HTML, each being an upgraded form of the previous version.
Shannon (2010) lists all the types of HTML.

HTML 1.0
HTML 2.0

HTML 3.2

HTML 4.01

HTML 5

Waterman (2012) also states that are many other types of coding languages. Such as
Extensible Markup Language (XML), and styling sheets like Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
There are also other languages like Flash and Java that are used to create interactive content.
Many other programming languages can be used to add specific functions to a web site.
