Hand out, Crayons &/or Coloring Pencils
Essential Standards and Clarifying Objectives
Standard 3- Life Science
Observe, describe and ask questions about living things and their relationships to their
environments.

Lesson objective(s):
Students will label the parts of the plants.
Students will discuss what parts of the plants do.

Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:

ENGAGEMENT

Describe how the teacher will capture students interest.

Watch a video---- Parts of a Plant
What kind of questions should the students ask themselves after the engagement?
Questions include: Can you recall the parts to a plant? Where is the root? Where is the stem? Where is the leaf? Where is the flower? Wha
does the stalk do? What can flowers turn into?

EXPLORATION

Describe what hands-on/minds-on activities students will be doing.

List big idea conceptual questions the teacher will use to encourage and/or focus students exploration
Students will receive a blank handout of the plant.
They will label the parts of the plant using the word bank.
The instructions are as follows ---Color the flower red, Color the stem brown, Color the leaves green, Color the stem black.
As coloring and labeling, ask questions like: Why are we coloring the stem and roots different colors? Can we explain why the stems are i
the ground? Etc

EXPLANATION

Student explanations should precede introduction of terms or explanations by the teacher. What questions or techniques will the teacher use to help
students connect their exploration to the concept under examination?
List higher order thinking questions which teachers will use to solicit student explanations and help them to justify their explanations.
Students will receive another handout.
This handout has the parts labeled along with their jobs; this allows us to know what each part does.
Questions that go along with this are: Can we predict what would happen if the water didnt receive water? Can we use cause and effect fo
different situations that go along with the flower? Can we create a chart that would go along with the process that a plant goes through?

ELABORATION

Describe how students will develop a more sophisticated understanding of the concept.
What vocabulary will be introduced and how will it connect to students observations?
How is this knowledge applied in our daily lives?
Repeat the parts of the plants to review for all students, list what the flower needs to survive, allow children to ask questions if they need
clarification, Sing Parts of a Plant song to get excitement again!!!

EVALUATION

How will students demonstrate that they have achieved the lesson objective?
This should be embedded throughout the lesson as well as at the end of the lesson
Students will take the Plant Assessment so that I can determine whether they know the content of what we went over throughout the week.
