Teaching
Procedure:
1. Motivation:
What
do
you
think
will
happen
when
I
put
an
egg
in
freshwater?
What
about
salt
water?
This
initial
question
will
motivate
the
students
and
raise
curiosity.
I
will
also
have
the
materials
for
the
demonstration
ready
so
the
students
will
be
excited
to
see
how
the
various
supplies
will
be
used.
2. Prior
Learning:
Yesterday
we
began
studying
freshwater
and
saltwater.
We
learned
that
97%
of
the
Earths
water
is
salt
water
and
only
3%
is
freshwater.
And
we
can
only
drink
1%
of
the
water
that
is
on
the
Earth.
3. Statement
of
Objective:
Today,
we
are
going
to
continue
to
look
at
properties
of
freshwater
and
saltwater.
Although
we
may
think
all
water
is
the
same,
there
are
actually
quite
a
few
differences
between
freshwater
and
saltwater.
4.
5. Instructional
Steps:
I
will
complete
the
demo
in
front
of
the
class
so
the
students
can
see
the
egg
float
easier
in
the
saltwater.
They
will
also
see
that
something
dense,
such
as
a
marble
will
sink
in
both.
Something
light,
like
a
toothpick,
will
float
in
both.
This
will
lead
us
to
the
Venn
Diagram
we
will
complete
as
a
class.
Guided
Practice:
Venn
Diagram
as
a
class.
The
freshwater
properties
will
include
drinking
water,
rain
water,
clear
color.
Salt
Water
Properties
will
include:
Sea
Water,
Cloudy,
Salty,
Things
Float
Easier.
Properties
of
both:
Liquid,
Things
can
Float.
We
will
talk
through
these
properties
which
will
allow
the
students
to
be
introduced
to
the
properties
and
ideas.
The
students
will
also
help
brainstorm
other
properties
to
fall
in
the
different
categories.
Independent
Practice:
The
students
will
then
return
to
their
seats
and
complete
a
Flip
Chart.
The
properties
that
we
discussed
as
a
class
will
be
on
one
piece
of
paper;
the
students
will
cut
these
properties
out
and
then
categorize
them
into
the
appropriate
categories.
Closure:
Get
out
a
sticky
note
and
write
down
1
new
thing
you
learned
in
science
today.
The
teacher
will
collect
the
sticky
notes
and
place
them
on
the
board.
Then
she
will
review
the
different
properties
of
freshwater
and
saltwater,
hitting
on
the
different
aspects
the
students
wrote
down.
Review:
I
will
call
out
different
properties
that
we
discussed.
If
the
student
thinks
it
is
a
property
of
saltwater,
he
or
she
will
sit
on
the
floor.
If
he
or
she
thinks
it
is
a
property
of
freshwater
then
he
or
she
will
stand
up.
This
will
allow
the
kids
to
move
while
reviewing
the
different
properties
discussed.
Future
Learning:
We
are
going
to
continue
learning
about
the
Earths
resources
and
how
these
resources
affect
our
lives
on
a
daily
basis.
Lesson
Extension
and/or
Modification:
Extension:
GT
students
will
be
encouraged
to
think
of
other
properties
that
could
fit
in
the
Venn
Diagram
and
add
them
to
their
diagram.
Modifications:
The
properties
are
written
for
the
students
and
the
words
are
taught
to
them/explained
out
loud
to
help
our
lower
readers
complete
the
task.
Assessment
of
Learning:
The
students
flip
chart
will
be
picked
up
and
graded
for
accuracy.
The
students
should
do
fairly
well
on
this
activity
because
the
guided
practice
will
prepare
them
for
the
individual
practice.
