LQ2 (Takehome)

Due: 12 Jan 2015 (Monday), 12nn

1. In a diesel engine, the pressure and temperature at the beginning of the compression are 1
bar and 27C. The volume ratios of compression and expansion for the engine are 15 and
8 respectively. Assume an ideal engine.
Determine/Show:
a. Mean effective pressure
b. Ratio of maximum pressure to mean effective pressure
c. Cycle efficiency.
d. Fuel consumption per kWh if the thermal efficiency is 0.5 of ideal efficiency,
mechanical efficiency is 0.8 and the calorific value of oil 42000 kJ/kg.
e. Each operation on p-V and T-s diagrams.

2. Air at 1 bar and 70C is compressed adiabatically until the pressure is 7 bar in Otto cycle
engine. 465 kJ of heat per kg of air is added at constant volume.
Determine/Show:
a. Compression ratio of the engine.
b. Temperature at the end of compression.
c. Temperature at the end of heat addition.
d. Each operation on p-V and T-s diagrams.

Submit on short bond paper.
