Service Bulletin
FURN-TRN-SB-15
Residential Furnace Burner Design Change
ORDER No:

FURN-SVB01A-EN

DATE: January 10, 2002

Introduction
The purpose of this bulletin is to advise customers of improvements associated with the inshot burners used in
residential gas furnaces manufactured in Trenton, NJ .

The action described in this bulletin is not being taken to address a safety concern.

Discussion

The improvement is a process called toggle-locking which is used to secure the two halves of the burner shell to each other.
In addition to clinching the flanges on the outside edges the two halves are further secured to each other by punching the
metal together in two locations near the burner tube. (See photo below.)

Note the dimples in the

burner near the tube.
Crossover Gap = 0.025

Repair Procedure
If a particular furnace is having light off or flame carry-over problems:

The fuel supply should be checked. It is important to note that many times LP gas supplies have been found to contain
excessive moisture or other contaminants. Many LP suppliers have additives which can be added to the LP tank (usually

methyl alcohol) which will absorb the moisture. The tank fill level and sizing, and fuel delivery pressures must be confirmed
as well.
The Hot Surface Ignitor (HSI) position should be confirmed and adjusted as necessary (see illustrations below).
Adjustments may be made by bending the ignitor mounting bracket if necessary.
New burners may be required (BNR01077)

been in effect in Service Parts for the majority of 2001. Aluminized steel, toggle-locked burners are used in production and
stainless steel, toggle-locked burners are used as replacement parts The original stainless steel replacement burner
(BNR01065) was being made this way beginning in the first quarter of 2001, even though the part number had not changed.

The stainless steel replacement part number has been changed to BNR01077. No aluminized steel replacement burners will
be stocked in replacement parts.
