ENGAGEMENT
To capture the students interest,
students will journal about their
experiences with money in their
math journals. The teacher will
write the following journal prompt
on the board, What do I know
about money? When have I seen
money being used? What is money
used for? and give students time to
write in their math journals.
During and after this engagement
activity, students will think about,
when have I seen money being
used?, what is money used for?,
what is the value of a quarter,
dime, nickel, etc.
EXPLANATION
Students will watch The Money
Song video which explains the
relationship between the different
coins and a dollar. After the video,
the teacher will introduce the
vocabulary words: value and
amount. The teacher will read The
Coin Counting Book by Rozanne
Lanczak Williams to the class. The
teacher will have students count

coins and use coins to make

different amounts of money.
Higher Order Thinking
Questions What is another way I
can make this amount of money?
How can I make this amount of
money using the least amount of
coins?
EXPLORATION
Each group of students will be
given bags of money. The teacher
will put different amounts of money
on the board. Students will work
with their group to come up with
two ways to make the amount of
money using the money they were
given. Students will explain how
they arrived at their answer.
Big Idea Conceptual Questions
- How do I use money to
represent a specific dollar
amount?
- How do I know how many
coins I need to make a certain
amount of money?
ELABORATION
The students will have a coin
caf. Students will be broken into
two groups: customers and waiters.
The waiters will serve the
customers at the restaurant. When
the customer is done, the customer
will have to pay the bill using the

money they have been given. Then,

the waiters will have to count the
money to make sure that the
customer has correctly paid the bill
before putting the money into the
cash register. The students will then
switch roles.
EVALUATION
After the activity, students will
individually complete a worksheet
where they will be given an amount
of money and will have to use
different coins and dollar bills to
make that amount of money. This
will be collected by the teacher.
