Branches of Social Studies

History
The word came from the Greek word Historia which means inquiry and
investigation.
Deals with the study of past events and people.
History provides us the information in determining the formula for progress and
success.
Herodotus: Father of History, Considered as the first historian of Greece
Classification of Sources
Primary Sources- are statements or reports of people who are considered
eyewitness to the unfolding of an event
Secondary Sources- could be in the form of essays and reports regarding the
primary sources
Relationship of History with other Social Sciences
Political Science
Knowledge in the past are used to interpret present and probable scenarios and
development in the political arena.
History as past politics and Politics as present History.
Economics
Deals with production, distribution and consumptions of goods and services.
Presents reasons behind the developed and undeveloped countries.
Geography
Geographical conditions like oil, climate, vegetation, population, land use
mountains and rivers directly affects civilization and development.
Sociology
A body of organized knowledge about the nature of man and society.
History uses sociological information to interpret the people and its community.
Anthropology
Deals with origin, physical and cultural developments, racial characteristics and
social customs and beliefs of mankind.
Psychology
The study of human behavior, manner of thinking and attitude.
Most of the Historical events happened because of human behavior.
Philosophy
The science of beings in their ultimate reasons, causes, and principles acquired by
the aid of human reason alone.
